Lorraine B. Prorok, a kind and gracious woman, passed away on the afternoon of September 14th at the age of 96 in her residence at StoryPoint, Granger. Lorraine was born on June 8th, 1928 in Buffalo, New York, to Bertha and Joseph Nowak. She graduated high school in 1946 from Villa Maria Academy in Cheektowaga, New York. On September 29, 1956, she married Joseph Prorok and they went on to enjoy 55 years of a marvelous life together defined by mutual respect and true, true love.
After being a homemaker for many years, Lorraine joined the late 1960's wave of women entering the workforce and held a variety of office and customer relations jobs in the Buffalo area, ultimately working for UPS from which she retired in 1991. In 2005, Lorraine and Joe moved from Cheektowaga to South Bend to be closer to family.Lorraine enjoyed knitting, crocheting, crossword puzzles, cooking, and baking well into her later years before failing eyesight made those pursuits too difficult. She was a stylish dresser who, until almost the very end, embraced a sophisticated monochromatic look (enhanced by a spritz of Calvin Klein Eternity). With her soothing manner and pocketful of treats, she had a magical way with dogs of every ilk. Above all, her greatest joy was spending time with her family. Lorraine soldiered through the infirmities of advanced age with good cheer and uncommon dignity. She will remain a reminder to all who loved her that kindness costs nothing yet means so much.
Left to cherish her memory are her daughter, Mary Prorok, of South Bend; grandson, Jack Feighery (Gonenc Mogol) of Manhattan; granddaughter, Maggie Feighery of Washington, DC; nieces Lynn Nowak (Metuchen, New Jersey) and Jill Rawson (North Merrick, New York); grandnieces, Julia and Emily; and grandnephews: Benjamin, Adam, and Eric. Lorraine was preceded in death by husband Joe and brother Leonard.
The family would like to thank the staff of StoryPoint Granger and Traditions Hospice for providing Lorraine with care and comfort during her last days. For all who read this, the family asks that if your mother is no longer with you, then visit her in your heart. And, if she still walks among us, well, call your mother.
A private service will be held.
