Louella Johnson, devoted wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother and great-great grandmother of Hampton, Virginia left to return to her heavenly home on January 9, 2023.
Born on October 19th, Louella always disputed the year of her birth saying that her true birth year was recorded four years late due to being born in the country and segregated south. A few days after her passing, it was found in a family Bible that she was correct in the accounting of her age and had been born in the year of 1921 making her 101.
Louella was born in Sumter, South Carolina to Nathan and Susan Amos where she spent many beautiful years growing up on a farm with her siblings Thomas Amos, Lewey Amos, Able Amos Olivia Shaw, Mary Levine, Louise Amos, Rosetta Holiday, who proceeded her in death and one surviving sister Barbara Perry. It is here where Louella (lovingly known as "Sis") would learn many of the homemade remedies that she would later pass down to her own children and friends.
In 1944 Louella was united in matrimony to the late Albert Johnson to whom she would be a devoted wife for over thirty-seven years. From this union seven children were born. Cleveland Johnson and Gloria Burns both who have passed, and her surviving children Bertlee Elliott, Albert Johnson Jr. (Theresa), Thomas Johnson (Tish) Carolyn Scott (Bernard) and Deborah Johnson Winkfield whom she raised.
During her lifetime Louella was a caretaker to the community, always looking out for family, friends and neighbors. In her later years, she enjoyed crocheting, coloring, dancing with friends and family and singing songs to the Lord. Always quick witted she would have those who were around her in stitches. Her feisty personality often consisted of loving words mixed with honest reality. She was very knowledgeable and although she had only received a fourth-grade education, she would be awarded in 2023 an honorary diploma from Hampton Christian High School for "life lived".
She leaves behind to cherish her memory sixteen grandchildren, (Angela Burns, Annette Burns, Mark Burns, Demetria Segovia, Deborah Johnson Winkfield, Sonya Scott, Nicole Scott Warren, Donya Johnson, Crystal Johnson, Kim Sharrock, Phillip Johnson, Ebony Johnson, Thomas Johnson Jr. (Keisha Johnson and Mary Winkfield, both deceased), twenty-eight great grandchildren, and one great, great grandchild, a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends and a special caregiver Ora Council.
Louella will be sincerely missed, and her legacy will forever be remembered as one of faith, compassion and grace.
