Louis Edgar Feagans

Louis Edgar Feagans, more commonly known as "Lou" or "Ed" by family and friends, age 84, of Martinsville, Indiana, passed away peacefully at 11:25 a.m. on Monday, November 3, 2025, at Community Hospital South in Indianapolis.
He was born on Tuesday, February 18, 1941, in Fremont, Ohio, to the late William Isaac and Mary Margaret (Duncheon) Feagans. Lou grew up in Montgomery, Indiana, and was a proud graduate of Montgomery High School with the Class of 1959. He continued his education at Vincennes University, earning his associate degree, followed by a bachelor's degree in education from Indiana State University and a master's degree in education from Indiana University.
Lou moved to Martinsville in 1965, beginning a lifelong dedication to education and community. He started his career teaching at Centerton Elementary School. In 1968, he became a teaching principal at Green Township Elementary School, serving there until 1978. He then spent twelve years as principal at Smith Elementary School before becoming the first principal of South Elementary School when it opened in 1990. Lou led South Elementary with dedication and heart until his retirement in 2003, leaving behind a legacy of kindness, leadership, and commitment to children's education.
A man of deep faith, Lou was a longtime member of St. Martin of Tours Catholic Church in Martinsville, a member of the Knights of Columbus, and a Saint Meinrad Benedictine Oblate. His devotion to his faith and community was evident in all aspects of his life.
Lou's passion for service extended well beyond education. He was a proud member of the Martinsville Kiwanis Club, the Morgan County Soil & Water Conservation District, and the American Legion Post #230. He served on the Indiana State Teacher's Retirement Board and was active in the Indiana Principal's Leadership Academy. Lou also dedicated 16 years of service to the Morgan County Public Library Board, reflecting his lifelong love of learning. He also served his country in the Army National Guard from 1958-1964.
An avid outdoorsman and teacher at heart, Lou shared his knowledge and enthusiasm through the Road Scholar organization, where he taught courses in photography, nature, and wildlife. He served as a director for the Indiana Boys Club at Bradford Woods for many years, mentoring countless young people and introducing many to the joys of chess and checkers.
In recognition of his many contributions to education and the community, Lou was honored in 2005 with the title of Sagamore of the Wabash by the State of Indiana-one of the state's highest distinctions.
Lou was a man of many interests. His hobbies included photography, nature, birdwatching, daily weather reporting, reading-especially about the Civil War-hunting, woodworking, and, most importantly, spending time with his grandchildren. He also trained hunting dogs for many years and enjoyed sharing his love of the outdoors with family and friends.
On June 6, 1964, Lou married the love of his life, Constance C. "Connie" (Claxton) Feagans. They shared 61 wonderful years of marriage, built on mutual respect, laughter, and devotion.
He is survived by his loving wife, Connie Feagans of Martinsville, IN; sons, Louis Edgar Feagans III (wife, Julia) of Indianapolis, IN, and Michael Feagans of Lebanon, IN; four beloved grandchildren, Louis Edgar Feagans IV of Washington, DC, Amanda Feagans of Indianapolis, Courtney Guignard (husband, Tex) of Boca Raton, FL, and Jacob "J.T." Feagans (wife, Luce) of Bolivia; two great-grandchildren, Eli and Titus Guignard, and one expected in February 2026. He is also survived by his sister, Mary Teresa Miller (husband, Dale) of Montgomery, IN; sister-in-law, Janice Feagans of Loogootee, IN; and several nieces and nephews.
Along with his parents, Lou was preceded in death by two brothers, William Feagans and Douglas Joseph Feagans, and one sister, Margaret "Peggy" Arvin.
Lou will be remembered for his warmth, humility, and tireless dedication to helping others-whether through education, community service, or simple acts of kindness. His legacy will continue to inspire all who had the privilege of knowing him.
Visitation for family and friends will be on Thursday, November 6th, 2025, from 4:00 PM – 7:30 PM at Neal & Summers Funeral and Cremation Center in Martinsville and from 10:00 AM – 11:00 AM on Friday, November 7th at the St. Peter's Catholic Church in Montgomery, Indiana. A rosary service will begin at 3:45 PM on Thursday at Neal & Summers. There will be a Mass of Christian Burial beginning immediately following the visitation at 11:00 AM on Friday at St. Peter's Catholic Church, 305 2nd Street in Montgomery. He will be laid to rest in St. Peter's Catholic Cemetery in Montgomery, Indiana.
