Louis Frederick "Fred" Gieg, Jr., 90, of Amelia Island passed away at the Warner Center for Caring on Wednesday, November 30, 2022.
He was born in Philadelphia, PA and was a son of the late Louis F. and Marie Wall Gieg.
Fred was raised in Philadelphia and attended the Haverford School through high school. He graduated from Dartmouth College in 1953 with a degree in history. He participated in sports, principally basketball and was Captain of the basketball team his senior year. In the fall of 1953, he married and soon after, joined the Army. Initially stationed in Missouri, he was transferred to England in 1955 where he belonged to a battalion which was detailed with repairing airfields. Completing his service in late 1955 he was honorably discharge.
Fred started a long career at U. S. Steel Corporation beginning in sales and eventually heading various divisions of the company around the country, becoming an officer of the company in the early 1970's. His final position with U. S. Steel was as Executive Vice President. In 1982 he left U. S. Steel to become Chief Executive Officer of R.M.I. Titanium Company. He spearheaded taking the company public in 1984.
After a long and distinguished career in metals manufacturing, Fred retired in 1997 and along with is wife, Pat, moved to Amelia Island. After retiring he enjoyed visits with family, traveling and cruises. He was active and enjoyed tennis and golf. Being an avid reader, he enjoyed historical biographies. He was also an active community member. He was involved in a myriad of community charities and associations. He was also a member of Amelia Plantation Chapel where he had served as its president in past years.
In addition to his parents, Fred was predeceased by his siblings, Charles Gieg, Dorothy Warner and Margaret Rullman.
He leaves behind his beloved wife of 38 years, Pat Gieg of Amelia Island; his children, Laura Kell of Kittering, ME, Carol Gieg and her husband, Luis Colina, of Benicia, CA, Lynn Peterson and her husband, Brad, of Davidson, NC and Sandra Drouillard and her husband, Tim, of Matthews, NC; 10 grandchildren, 13 great grandchildren and one "on the way" as well as several nieces, nephews and other extended family members.
A service to remember and celebrate Fred's life will be held Wednesday, December 7, 2022 at the Amelia Plantation Chapel beginning at 11:00 AM.
Rather than flowers, the family asks donations be made, in his memory, to The Boys and Girls Club of Nassau County, The Amelia Plantation Chapel or Community Hospice of NE Florida.
