Dr. Louis Bond Hughes went to be with the Lord on Sunday, November 16, 2025, surrounded by family and friends in
Baytown, TX. He was born on August 21, 1927, in Austin, TX to Emery Henry and Katherine Brady Hughes. He was preceded in death by his parents, his sisters, Katherine "Tinka" and Patricia, brother, John R., son, Christopher Louis Hughes, daughter, Anne Hughes Tarski, and grand son in law, Lawrence Patrick Wegrzyn.
He attended St. Edwards Military Academy and the University of Texas. At the age of 17 he entered Tulane Medical School in New Orleans, LA. He graduated June 1, 1949, and on June 2, he married his "Bubbles", Edwina Prados whom he met while interning at Charity Hospital where she was a lab technician.
Louis spent four years in the Navy as a flight surgeon with the Marine Air Corps and was discharged in 1953. He and Edwina settled in Hearne, TX, a small town where his maternal grandfather had been mayor. He practiced medicine there for six years at The Searcy-Fleming Clinic working with board qualified surgeons.
In 1959 they moved to Baytown to be near the Medical Center in Houston and bought an interest in Baytown Hospital. He later helped develop the new Baytown Hospital. In 1972, he moved to San Jacinto Hospital practicing patient care, surgery and delivering babies. He reportedly was among the last in the operating room at the old San Jacinto Hospital and the first at the new facility on Garth Rd. He worked with the Family Practice Residency Program and later became full-time faculty, sharing his wealth of medical knowledge. He retired in 2017 after practicing medicine for 68 years.
Louis was an accomplished pilot. He started flying while serving in the Marine Corps. He progressed to commercial and instrument ratings in single and multi-engine aircraft on land and sea. He became a certified flight instructor, took acrobatic training and participated in civilian international fighter pilot tournaments called Sky Warriors in Atlanta, GA.
A very devout man, Louis was a proud member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Baytown.
There he served as a Eucharistic Minister, Lay Reader and loved to attend daily mass. He took communion to St. James Nursing Home and homebound Catholics. He lovingly supported St. Joseph Regional Catholic School and served as a member of the school board.
He belonged to the Knights of Columbus as a retired fourth degree Knight, the Lions Club(50yrs), AOPA, East Harris County Family Practice, AAFP, and Serra International Club, which promotes religious vocations. Louis served many positions in Serra including International Vice President. Pope John Paul Il awarded him the highest honor the Pope can bestow on a member of the laity, Pro Ecclesia et Pontifices in 1979. In 2016 he was
awarded the Frank Metyko Award as Outstanding Serran in District 10 which encompasses the Galveston/Houston Archdiocese.
Louis was named East Harris County Physician of the year in 2002; Texas Academy of Family Practice Physician of the Year 2003 and honored by the Bay Area Rehabilitation center for service to the Baytown community.
While he loved the Lord and practicing medicine, Louis was a devoted husband and father to his four children. He gave his family wonderful trips, domestic and abroad. He treated them to adventures including water skiing, snow skiing, hiking, sailing, ranching, horseback riding, and hunting.
Louis is survived by his wife of 76 years Edwina Prados Hughes, two children: Julie Hughes Bailey of Baytown and Timothy Louis Hughes of Houston and son in law, Paul Tarski of Uvalde, TX. He was the proud grandfather (Doc) to seven grandchildren and their spouses:
Elizabeth Tarski McArthur and husband, Paul, Alexandra Tarski Wegrzyn, Caroline Tarski Lauber and husband, Benjamine, Grady Lawson Bailey and wife, Julia, Margaret Tarski Rodriguez and husband, Chris, Garrett Hughes Bailey and wife, Nikki, Sarah Bailey Trujillo and husband, Javier. He cherished his eight great grandchildren: Olivia, Charlotte and Angelina Wegryn, Robert 'Beau' and Henry Louis 'Hank' Lauber, Jameson and Cameron Rodriguez and Audrey Bailey.

A visitation will take place on Tuesday, November 25 at Crespo & Jirrels 6123 Garth Road
Baytown, TX 77521 beginning at 5:00 PM with a rosary at 6:30 PM. A funeral mass will be offered at St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church 800 W. Baker Rd.
