Louisa Bradlow Carman, 25, taken in a tragic car accident in Plainsboro, New Jersey on January 1, 2024. Daughter of Ann Bradlow and Glen Carman, sister to Evan Carman, partner of Vitor Leopoldo de Aguiar dos Anjos. A beloved daughter, sister, partner, niece, cousin, and friend; a natural with young children. She was full of joy, a patient and thoughtful soul, wise beyond her years, at home in the worlds of ideas and of action. Louisa grew up in Chicago, with an early interest in dance across many classical and contemporary styles, while also excelling at her academic studies at Jones College Prep in the Chicago Public School district. She went on to graduate with high honors from Swarthmore College in 2021 with a BA in Political Science and a minor in Dance. She was inducted into the Phi Beta Kappa honors society and received the Holly Jo Stein Award for achievement in the Program for Dance. Louisa was fluent in Spanish and studied abroad at the Universidad Autónoma de Yucatán in Mexico. Her professor of Latin American politics described her as "one of my favorite students at Swarthmore, a wonderful person and incredibly talented." Upon graduation, Louisa joined the office of the Governor of New Jersey, starting as an intern, soon becoming a full-time Policy Analyst. Governor Phil Murphy said in a statement that Louisa "quickly gained a reputation as someone who could tackle difficult policy topics and develop meaningful solutions – serving as a driving force behind our prescription drug affordability and medical debt relief work." She continued dancing and exploring her interest in choreography. She had just submitted applications to law school, which she planned to begin in September and looked forward to a life shaping public policy. In and outside the classroom, she explored her family's historic ties to South Africa, the United States, and Israel / Palestine, and her partner Vitor's roots in Brazil. Louisa will be remembered by all who knew her. We celebrate the full life that she lived and mourn the promise that has now been taken. I knew Louisa as a talented dancer and skilled student. She had a smile that could light up a room, and a kindness and openness that was revealed on stage and in the classroom. My condolences to her family, she will be remembered.
