Louise Esher Obituary

(nee Lenco) Louise passed peacefully, with her family by her side, on March 14, 2020 at the age of 90, of Haddon Township, NJ, formerly of Philadelphia, PA. Beloved wife of the late William J. Esher, Jr. Loving mother of Leslie Barnard (Tom) of Barrington, NJ, Bill Esher, III of Philadelphia, PA, Glenn Esher of Haddon Township and the late Lynn L. Esher. Proud grandmother of Katelyn Seeley (Michael) of Barrington, NJ.  Great grandmother of Emma Rose and Michael, III. Dear sister-in-law of Ann Louise Gibbons. Loving Aunt of Kristin Rief (Tom) of Lafayette Hill, PA, Karol Gibbons of Philadelphia, PA and James Gibbons (Rena) of Baltimore, MD.

Louise attended Girls High in Philadelphia and went on to attend Temple University, where she excelled in field hockey, basketball and softball, and was inducted into the Temple Athletic Hall of Fame, as well as the Pennsylvania Sports Hall of Fame. After graduating from Temple, Louise went on to teach at Simon Gratz High School in Philadelphia, where she met her husband, Bill. Louise was a long time Haddon Township resident where she was an active member of the community, including the PTA, local sports and officiating. She was a long time member of Haddonfield United Methodist Church.  Louise was an avid sports fan and could often be found officiating field hockey or softball games well into her twilight years. Louise’s advocacy interests were represented as a longtime member of the SCUCS board as well as being instrumental in establishing the SenHan transportation program. One of her greatest joys was in supporting the Arts, particularly the Theater Arts, through volunteering. She had a lifelong association with the Chapel of the Four Chaplains, exemplifying her equanimity in regards to faith and race. Louise was a loving and supportive wife and mother, adoring grandmother, proud great grandmother as well as being a loving and supportive friend to just about anyone she met.

A Celebration of her life will be at a later date at Haddonfield United Methodist Church. In lieu of flowers, contributions in Louise’s memory may be made to the Lynn L. Esher Opportunity Fund, c/o Philadelphia Foundation, 1835 Market St., Suite 2410, Philadelphia, PA 19103 or follow the link to donate to Philadelphia Girls High School Alumni Fund https://ghsalumnae.org

I got to know Louise when she was active in the HPERD Alumni Association at Temple University. You couldnt find a sweeter, more caring person. When meetings ran late she often offered to drive me back to Haddonfield. When you needed a volunteer, she was there. And her love of the arts was without parallel. We will miss you Louise, you loyal Owl.

Louise Esher was and always will be my loving Aunt. There are so many memories of good times down the shore and at family holidays. She was an Aunt that always made me feel important and very loved. I never doubted her love for me, she showed it in so many ways.
My Aunt was kind, loving, and very curious about life. She loved people and wanted to know their story. She was so good to so many people. I will always be grateful for the positive impact she made in my life. She was a wonderful Aunt.
