Lowell Thomas Smith
It's with great sadness that the family of Lowell Thomas Smith, 86 years old, of Midland, MI, announces his passing on Friday, December 5, 2025. Lowell was born August 6, 1939, in Caro, MI to Charles Austin and Mable Katherine (Smith) Smith.
Lowell was a Godly man who lived out his Christian faith every day. He shared his faith in many ways which included several years as a Gideon member, teaching Sunday school, and leading worship music at Colwood United Brethen Church. He was a teacher in the Caro school system where he cared for and taught children for over 30 years. Lowell and Dee moved to Midland, Michigan 2014.
Lowell loved his family well, always greeting with a smile and a hug. He was a "kid-at-heart." Memories were made with his children and grandchildren searching for morel mushrooms, wild blackberries, and deer sheds. They played countless games together, like Carroms, Monopoly, and card games. He aways made a point to attend every sporting event, regardless of the wind, rain, or cold. His grandchildren lived just across the creek, and would visit by crossing the log bridge that he built. Papa Lowell shared the best jokes with his great-grandchildren. He made it known to his great-grandchildren of his love of sports, specifically the Lions, the Tigers, and the Wolverines. This was true especially when it came to the Michigan and Ohio rivalries.
His interests included watching and playing sports, working in the woods on the family's forty acres, hunting, and collecting rocks and fossils. In later years he started collecting '57 Chevy model cars.
Lowell is survived by his wife, Delores of Midland; daughters, Melissa (Jerry) Toner of Midland, and Cindy (Dan) Davis of Grand Rapids; grandchildren, Megan (Josh) Peterson of Midland, Zachary (Christina) Toner of Ohio; great-grandchildren, Luci Peterson, Lea Peterson, Carmen Toner, and Peyton Toner. Lowell is also survived by his sisters, June (David) Harkless, and Nancy (Paul) Harkless of Indiana. In addition to his parents, Lowell is preceded in death by his brothers, David Smith, Wayne Smith, and sister, Phyllis Smith.
The funeral service will take place at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, December 11, 2025, at Calvary Baptist Church, 6100 Perrine Rd., Midland, MI. Lowell's family will receive friends at the church Thursday at 9:30 a.m. before the service. A luncheon at the church will follow the service. Interment will take place following the luncheon in the Midland Cemetery for anyone who would like to attend. Those planning an expression of sympathy are asked to consider Gideon's International.
