Lowry Greenlee passed away peacefully in Moraga, California, on November 1, 2025. Born and raised in Danville, Kentucky, Lowry followed her spirit of adventure westward upon graduation-first to the music and magic of New Orleans, then onward to San Francisco, where she found not just a city, but a home where her heart would remain. She brought her Southern grace and warmth to the Bay Area, where she built a life centered around family, hospitality, and a door that was always open to all.
A devoted mother and grandmother, Lowry had a gift for making everyone feel welcome. Whether in her Orinda home, on Little Venice Island in the Delta, or at Lake Tahoe, Lowry loved to host, and her natural warmth made every gathering feel special. Her kitchen became legendary as the gathering place where her sons' friends knew they'd find a delicious casserole, laughter, and a mother who genuinely delighted in the chaos of a house full of teenagers. She would light up when Robert or Nicholas came home with their pack of friends, buzzing around the kitchen island, feeding the insatiable crowd, and soaking in every moment of the joyful commotion. She embraced her role as stepmother with the same devotion, ensuring her family remained close and connected. While the beautiful chaos of family life occasionally tested her patience, she met it all with humor, grace, and unwavering love.
Lowry loved sunshine, family, and being fully present in her family's lives. With a generous spirit and a deep love for animals, she had a knack for making ordinary days feel memorable. She dedicated herself to her community through volunteer work, including serving as President of the Oakland Strokes Youth Rowing Team for several years, where she supported young athletes in pursuing their passion for the sport. While her heart remained forever loyal to Kentucky Wildcats basketball, Lowry wholeheartedly embraced the Cal Bears, hosting tailgates so memorable they became a cherished tradition among friends and fellow fans.
Lowry was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Gordon Walker Greenlee, her parents, John Robert and Elizabeth Lococco Stagg, and her sister, Susan Nicholas "Nickie" Stagg.
She is survived by her sons, Robert (Marisol) and Nicholas (Nicole), and her grandchildren Sydney, Justine, Jackson, Carter, Dylan, and Miles, her stepchildren, Lisa (Steve Clawson), Geoff (Sonia), and Phyllis (John Walker), and her brother, John R. (Pamela) Stagg Jr.
Lowry will be remembered for her kindness, her dedication to family, the warmth of her kitchen, and the gentle grace with which she touched the lives of all who knew her.
A celebration of life and interment will take place at 11 a.m. on Monday, November 17, 2025, at Bellevue Cemetery in Danville, KY. A celebration of life will also be held in the San Francisco Bay Area at a later date. Memorial donations may be made to the Alzheimer's Association at alz.org.
