Sister Lucianna Derus

Sister Lucianna Derus, 91, a member of the Franciscan Sisters of Christian Charity, passed away on Wednesday afternoon, September 3, 2025, at the Holy Family Convent, Manitowoc, WI.

The former Lucille Derus was born on January 6,1934 in Oshkosh, WI to the late Hubert E. and Mary L. (Lederhofer) Derus. She entered the convent in 1949 and professed her vows in 1953. Sister Lucianna earned a Bachelor of Music Education Degree from Silver Lake College, Manitowoc, and a Master of Science in Teaching Music Degree from UW Oshkosh, Oshkosh, Wisconsin.

Sister Lucianna's ministry took her to various places where she taught classroom music, gave private music lessons, lead various choirs and was organist: St Ambrose, Ironwood; St. Francis DeSales, Manistique and Catholic Central, Menominee, all in Michigan; St. Agnes, Mingo Junction; St. Mary, Delaware; SS Peter and Paul, Wellston, all in Ohio; St. Willibrord, Chicago, Illinois; St. Francis, Yuma, Arizona and Catholic Memorial, Waukesha: St. Bernard and St. Philip, Green Bay; St. Joseph, Rice Lake; Sacred Heart, Oshkosh; St Thomas More, Appleton; and Roncalli and Holy Family Conservatory, Manitowoc, all in Wisconsin. For several years she lived in Oshkosh and was caregiver for her mother. While living at St. Francis Convent and at Holy Family Convent, Manitowoc, Sister Lucianna was organist, gave music lessons and was a member of the Community's Prayer Apostolate. Since 2023 Sister Lucianna had been a resident of St. Rita Health Center, Manitowoc.

Survivors include the Franciscan Sisters of Christian Charity, sister Irene Derus, sister-in-law Sharon Derus, nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents: Hubert and Mary (Lederhofer) Derus; one brother: Edward Derus; and one sister and brother-in-law: Patricia (James) Youngworth.

The Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:15 am on Saturday, September 5, 2025 at the Holy Family Convent Chapel, Manitowoc. Officiating will be the Rev. Placid Stroik, OFM, with burial to follow at the Holy Family Convent Cemetery.

The family will greet relatives and friends from 4:00 pm until 8:00 pm on Friday, September 4, 2025 at the Holy Family Convent, Manitowoc. A prayer service will be held at 7:00 pm at the Holy Family Convent Chapel. Visitation will continue Saturday morning from 8:00 am until 10:00 am.
