Lucille Philomena Grant was a beautiful and beloved light everywhere she went. She spread joy with her warm smile, kindness, soft but determined touch, and loving presence. Born on March 24, 1934, in Guyana, a small, culturally rich country on the northern coast of South America, Lucille was the daughter of the late Anselmo Henson and the late Louisa Carr. Her light dimmed on January 30, 2026, when she peacefully departed this world in Tallahassee, Florida. Lucille's enduring love for life and the precious memories of a life well lived will continue to shine brightly and be forever in the hearts of all those blessed by her grace and wisdom.

Raised in Guyana, which was a British Colony until its independence in 1966, Lucille grew up in Pomeroon. A life adventurer, Lucille sailed to the United Kingdom in her early 20s seeking new opportunities as part of the Windrush Generation of Caribbean immigrants who migrated to the United Kingdom in the '40s, '50s, '60s and '70s. She arrived in Liverpool, England, in 1956. She eventually settled in London, England, where she met and married Charles Augustus Grant, a devoted and loving husband, father, uncle and friend, who preceded her in death.

FAMILY & WORK LIFE

Lucille and Charles were married on January 2, 1964. They made their home in Isleworth, England, a western suburb in London, where they welcomed their three sons, William, Trevor and Reginald. Even before Lucille gave birth to three boys, she and Charles lovingly welcomed their nephew, Keith Samuels of Jamaica, into their home when he was 12 years old and helped to raise him as one of their own. In 1972, the Grants moved to Jamaica, the country where Charles was born. In 1975, they returned to England to live again in Isleworth and later in Acton, another western London suburb. In 1983, the family moved to the United States to be closer to Charles' father, William, and his wife, Catherine (Aunt Kate), in Miami, Florida. Their two eldest sons, William and Trevor, eventually returned to Europe, while their youngest, Reginald, remained with Lucille and Charles in the United States.

Wherever they lived, Lucille and Charles loved to host parties for family and friends. The couple's family and friends network was extensive and international. They made countless friends, and Lucille touched many lives with her generosity and culinary talents. Lucille was always the life of any party with her wonderful laughter, wit, charm and grace. She was prim and proper, always fashionable and full of energy. She was very proud of her West Indian heritage and experiences. Through the warmth, camaraderie, pride, and connections that bind Caribbean people, she thrived socially. An outstanding cook and trained baker, Lucille had many signature dishes often craved and enjoyed by her entire family and the many friends she made everywhere she lived. Those dishes included Jamaican staples such as Curry Chicken, Oxtails, and Rice and Peas. She also wowed family and friends with her professional baking skills, creating delectable desserts such as Jamaican Rum Cake, Trifle, Victoria Sponge Cake, Hot Cross Buns for Easter, and special occasion cakes for weddings, birthdays, anniversaries and christenings. As a master chef, Lucille would make every dish delicious and memorable.

She cherished her two most important roles as wife and mother, and later added loving grandmother to the list. Lucille loved the warmth and vibrancy of her international and West Indian community in South Florida, but the birth of her first grandchild, Micah, drew her to Tallahassee in 2001, where Reginald and his wife, Adriane, lived. Lucille was proud of and loved all four of her grandchildren, and was excited for every birth, as Jadon (2003), Elias (2005) and Bella (2008) propelled her to her favorite role, their Grandma.

For Lucille, family was always her top priority, but throughout her life she held many full-time and part-time professional roles in England and the United States. She was a switchboard operator, archiving airline records, and employee benefits enrollment for employers including Hammersmith Hospital, United Biscuits, British Overseas Airways Corporation (now British Airways), Eastern Airlines and Miami-Dade Schools. She was licensed and sold real estate in Miami in the 1990s and early 2000s before moving to Tallahassee.

FAITH

A follower of Christ, Lucille played guitar during worship services in England. She faithfully attended church and held memberships wherever she lived. For many years in England and in the United States, she worshipped in Catholic churches. She also found comfort and fellowship in nondenominational, Pentecostal and Baptist houses of worship. But buildings and denominations weren't the things this humble servant focused on; she believed that anyone who accepted Christ as their personal Savior was part of the same family. Later in Tallahassee, she joined with her young grandsons to become a proud member of Bethel African Methodist Episcopal Church, where she looked forward to attending Vacation Bible School every summer and was a member of the Senior Adult Ministry. She loved studying the Bible, often reading and studying alone for hours and attending group meetings. One of her favorite Scriptures, which she often recited, was Psalm 23, "The Lord is My Shepherd." She loved Gospel hymns and would often be heard listening to them and singing along. Among her favorite hymns were "How Great Thou Art," "Amazing Grace," "Great is Thy Faithfulness" and "Blessed Assurance."

WORLD TRAVELER

Lucille embraced the world as an international traveler. She enjoyed European camping trips with her husband and sons. She often traveled with tour groups, family and friends throughout Europe, the United States, Canada and the Caribbean as well as in Africa, and Central and South America. In addition to the countries she called home – Guyana, England, Jamaica and the United States – she visited Austria, Belgium, the Bahamas, Canada, Costa Rica, Denmark, Egypt, France, Germany, Ireland, the Netherlands and Venezuela. In the United States, she traveled to Atlanta, Las Vegas, Los Angeles, New York, Washington, D.C., the Virgin Islands, Yellowstone National Park in Wyoming and the Grand Canyon in Arizona as well as extensively throughout Florida.

PASSIONS & ACHIEVEMENTS

Lucille was an accomplished baker, receiving a commercial baking certification in 1994 from the Robert Morgan Vocational Technical Institute in Miami. Also in 1994, she was recognized by the Florida Restaurant Association with a Distinguished Student Award for outstanding academic achievement in culinary arts and hospitality.

In addition to cooking and traveling, Lucille loved music and dancing. She was talented at playing the guitar. She was gregarious and often the first person to boogie down on the dance floor. She loved music, from The Beatles to Soul to Reggae and Calypso to Classical and Gospel.

Lucille was cast as an extra in the role of a hand-maiden and appeared in the 1959 classic movie "The Mummy," starring Peter Cushing and Christopher Lee and filmed in Windsor, England.

In the 1970s, she and her family were selected by a London radio station to meet the great Muhammad Ali. Also, Lucille and Charles were once audience guests on the game show "The Price is Right."

In 2009, she traveled with Reginald, his family and the Boys' Choir of Tallahassee to the first inauguration of President Barack Obama, where they were joined by her loving nephew Keith for the experience of a lifetime.

Living in Tallahassee for nearly 25 years, Lucille was active for several years in activities and programs at the Tallahassee Senior Center and with a group of Caribbean family members and friends who hosted dinner parties and other social events. During elections, Lucille was a diligent poll worker for the Leon County Supervisor of Elections.

In more recent years, after moving into assisted living facilities and later a skilled nursing facility, Lucille was adored by staff and residents alike and often recognized for her thoughtful and kind gestures, characteristic wit and beautiful smile.

Wherever she went in the world, strangers soon became friends. Everyone loved Lucille. It was impossible not to. To the people who cherished her most, she will always be Mum, Grandma, Aunt Lucille, Lucy and Mamma Lou.
