Lucille Lauf, 89, longtime Pick City/Hazen area resident, passed away peacefully Friday, October 25, 2024, in a New Salem, ND nursing home.
Lucille Unterseher was born July 3, 1935 to Herbert and Hulda (Baier) Unterseher at their family farm home located in Oliver County. She attended country school near their home at SpringBrook School #2. Lucille acquired the skills on the farm necessary to be a lifelong woman of the prairie. She was diligent, hardworking, maybe a little spicey at times, but remained faithful to her God, family and friends her entire life.
Lucille married Elmer Lauf on July 1, 1956 at St. Matthew's Lutheran Church in Hazen. They made a life on the Lauf family farm located between Pick City and Hazen, ND and were blessed with a son, Brent.
Together, they maintained a dairy operation for many years, farmed small grains and raised beef cattle. Hereford and Angus were the staples of production on the farm, for 4H and the ND State Fair, where they won numerous awards for their stock over the years.
Lucille's garden could have been considered a field to some due to its size and variety of produce. She spent many spring, summer and fall days watering, weeding, picking and canning. Lucille enjoyed sharing the fruits of her labor with family, friends and always had treats for gatherings at the church. Fleischkuechle, soup (with everything left over in it), and pie were a few of her favorite things to make when hosting company or a holiday meal. Greetings and conversation in German were often shared, leaving many family members to wonder grandma and grandpa's actual thoughts!
Lucille and Elmer were active members of St. Paul's Lutheran Church but were often found attending many services in their area. They enjoyed visiting with friends over a cup of coffee, sharing a meal with family and attending sporting events of their son during his playing and coaching days and later grandchildren in Riverdale, Bismarck, New Salem and Minot. Lucille clipped many articles to archive their accomplishments over the years.
Lucille remained on the farm for a year after Elmer passed away on April 27, 2021. She treasured the friendships of her farm neighbors and close friends in Hazen that were always there to help. She became a resident and roommate of her sister Fern at Elm Crest Manor in New Salem in the fall of 2022.
Lucille will be remembered for her strong will and determination, hard work ethic, willingness to speak up, cards given for special events, the faith and love for her family and especially for the way her eyes lit up when she shared her big smile.
Lucille is survived by her grandchildren Justin (Samantha) Lauf, Minot, Samantha Lauf, San Diego, CA, Kyley (fiancé Luke Weerts) Lauf, Madison Lauf, both of Fargo, ND and Lincoln Roth, Minot, ND; great-grandchildren Blakely Jo and Leilani Lauf and Bo Banks; sister Fern Unterseher, New Salem, ND and daughter-in-law Allison (Mark) Roth, Minot, ND; sisters-in-law Naomi Lauf and Delora Kellar, both of Bismarck, ND along with numerous extended family and friends.
Lucille was preceded in death by her parents, husband Elmer, son Brent, great grandson, Isaac Louis, brothers Lester and Duane Unterseher and brothers-in-law Emil Lauf, Iver Lauf and Aaron Kellar.
A Visitation for family and friends to pay their respects will be held on Friday, November 8, 2024 from 1:00 p.m. until 3:00 p.m. at St. Paul Lutheran Church, rural Hazen, ND. A Memorial Service will be held the following week at 11:00 a.m. Friday, November 15, 2024 at St. Paul Lutheran Church, rural Hazen.
