Luella Shaffer Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Austin H. Eberly Funeral Home, Inc. - Dallastown on Oct. 24, 2025.

Publish in a newspaper

Luella May Shaffer of York left her earthly home and entered the Kingdom of Heaven on October 21, 2025. Born January 23, 1931, in Graydon, York County, she was the 2nd daughter of the late Jacob and Edna (Redding) Godfrey.

Luella attended primary school in a 1-room schoolhouse, then attended Junior High at Hannah Penn in York City until 1945. During her teenage years, she survived a battle with Polio and later earned her GED once she was healthy again.

After graduating from Thompson's Business School of York, Luella worked in administration for Mercury Engineering Corp in York. She was then a stay-at-home mom for several years until going back to work for several York employers including Futer Brothers Jewelers as well as several banks including the "round" York Bank on Queen Street. She also worked as a bookkeeper for Godfrey Bros. Meats.

Luella was 94 years young and the matriarch for 4 generations. She was happily married to her devoted husband, Clarence E. Shaffer, together they celebrated their 68th wedding anniversary on June 16th. They completed their family with two sons, Blaine & Dean.

Luella & her family faithfully attended Codorus Church in Loganville. She found strength and solace in reading scriptures, singing hymns, and prayerful daily meditations. She enjoyed baking her prized sugar cakes, desserts, making her applesauce and homemade meals. She also completed many 500-piece puzzles in the last several years. Luella was a talented seamstress and took pride in her neat handwriting always sending thoughtful cards and pictures to loved ones.

Luella is survived by her husband Clarence of York, sons Blaine Shaffer of Christiana, PA, and Dean Shaffer and wife, Linda of Mettawa, IL, five grandchildren, Lance and Ryan Shaffer of Mettawa, IL, Jen Rieser and husband, Eric of Washington D.C., Kay Donato and husband, Cole of York, and Douglas Shaffer and wife, Lauren of Lake Butler, FL. She also has 5 great-grandchildren: Leila and Willa Rieser, Isabella Landi, and Lorelei and Maggie Donato. She was preceded in death by her older sister, Laura Groff and numerous sisters and brothers-in-law. Luella was also an aunt to 11 nieces and nephews.

Luella is at peace now and we will miss her dearly. A viewing will be held on Saturday November 1, 2025, at 11:00 A.M. at Codorus Church, 1129 Dunkard Valley Rd, followed by a service at 12:00 P.M. Interment will follow at Susquehanna Memorial Gardens. Following interment, the family invites attendees back to Codorus Church for a time of fellowship and a light meal.

In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to Codorus Church.
