Luke Douglas Messner, son of Beirne and Joyce (Mogler) Messner, was born October 25, 1990 in Morris, Minnesota. Luke grew up in rural Hancock, where he attended the Apostolic Christian Church with his family.  Luke had just begun the 10th grade at the Hancock Public School, where he was a member of FFA and the Hancock School Choir.  He also kept busy working with his father and brother in their construction business. Luke enjoyed woodworking, fishing and hunting, and was looking forward to the bow hunting season that was about to begin. He especially enjoyed the time he spent with his family and friends. Luke had a smiley disposition and was energetic and fun-loving, which showed whenever he was playing with his nieces and nephews.
