Lupe Barela, 78, a lifelong resident of Santa Fe, New Mexico, passed away peacefully in her home on December 22, 2025, surrounded by the love of her family.
Lupe was born in Santa Fe on October 6, 1947. On December 15, 1962, she married Eduardo Barela, with whom she shared a lifetime of devotion, family, and cherished memories.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Eligio and Teofila Martinez; her sister, Rosalie Martinez; her daughter, Arlene Born; her son, Steve Barela; and her son-in-law, Philip Meek.
Lupe is survived by her husband, Eduardo Barela; her brothers, Abelino Martinez and Carlos Martinez and his wife, Nora Martinez; her son, Joe Barela, and his wife, Loretta Barela; her daughter, Diana Meek; as well as her treasured grandchildren, Jordan, Kevin, Adrian, Ryan, Alex, and Leann, and many great-grandchildren who brought her immense joy. She also had many nieces and nephews she absolutely adored.
Lupe was deeply loved and admired by her family and friends. She found her greatest happiness in caring for others, especially through her cooking, which brought everyone together around the table. She cherished time spent with her children and delighted in every moment shared with her grandchildren, whose lives she touched with warmth, patience, and unconditional love.
A Mass in celebration of Lupe’s life will be held on January 30 at 10:00 a.m. at St. Anne Parish in Santa Fe.
Lupe’s legacy of love, family, and faith will live on in the hearts of all who knew her.
