LUTHER ANDERSON, JR Obituary
Luther Ervin Anderson, 91, of Indianapolis, passed away peacefully on October 9, 2025. Born on December 25, 1933, in St. Joseph County, Indiana, Luther lived a life marked by dedication, service, and connection. The son of Luther Anderson, Sr. and Alice Ash Anderson, and lovingly raised by his stepmother, Jessica Anderson, Luther grew up with a strong sense of responsibility.
After proudly serving his country in the United States Army, Luther began a remarkable 42-year career with the United States Postal Service. Known for his reliability and devotion to duty, he earned numerous commendations for never taking a sick day throughout his career. His integrity and work ethic made him a trusted colleague and respected leader. As president of the American Postal Workers Union, he advocated for fairness and opportunity for all employees.
In his early years, Luther was a familiar face along Indiana Avenue, where he soaked in the sounds of the city's vibrant jazz scene. Music remained a lifelong passion - from the lively energy of the Avenue's heyday to the smooth tunes of the Jazz Kitchen. He'd often bop his head to a favorite song and flash his signature grin while saying, "What you know about that?"
After retiring in 2000, Luther became a beloved regular at the American Legion Post near downtown Indianapolis on Martin Luther King Jr. Drive, where friends affectionately called him, "The Mayor." With his sharp wit and that unforgettable "stink eye" reserved for moments of disapproval, he kept everyone entertained. A true foodie, Luther seldom turned down a meal from one of the city's local soul food spots.
Luther was an Indianapolis Colts fan, holding season tickets for decades. Whether cheering for the Colts and the Indiana Pacers, catching an Ohio State game, or watching the Super Bowl, he was happiest when surrounded by the thrill of the game and the people he loved.
Those who knew him will remember his steadfast loyalty, sense of humor, and deep appreciation for the simple joys of life. Luther Anderson leaves behind a legacy of service, laughter, and love - a life well-lived and deeply cherished.
A devoted husband, father, and grandfather, Luther was preceded in death by his wife of more than 40 years, Anna Anderson, whom he affectionately called "My Bunny." Together they shared a beautiful, blended family. He is survived by his six children, Derek Anderson, Brent (Ben) Anderson, Montica (Rae) Stratton, Braun Anderson (by his previous wife, Sherry Faulk Anderson), and Tiffany Bussell, and Nicki Arnold; his grand-children, Ajene' Stratton, Courtney Anderson, Chasmin Anderson, Derek Anderson, Jr., Joshua Anderson, and Fayevea Anderson Warren, as well as many great-grandchildren.
He also was preceded in death by his parents and stepmother, as well as his siblings, Garth Anderson, Anita Elaine Anderson, Anna Marie Anderson Dixon, and Sharon Anderson. He is survived by his brothers, Ralph (Kay) Anderson and Michael Anderson; his sister, Kay Anderson Bryant; his cousin, Mary Louise Streets, and a host of nieces and nephews.
