In Loving Memory of Luther Brotherton III
Luther Bernard Brotherton III passed away on March 18, 2025, at the age of 80. Born on November 11, 1944, in Dallas, Texas, to Luther Brotherton Jr. and Georgia Elizabeth Stone, Luther was affectionately known as "Baby Brother" by his sisters.
Luther attended Dallas Lincoln High School, where he was a proud member of the basketball team and graduated at the top of his class. He was well known for his sharp dressing style and the briefcase that he carried with a purpose. He embodied an early professionalism, a disciplined business mindset and a quiet confidence that had been there from day one. During high school, he worked at the local movie theater, where he earned the nickname "Popcorn." The nickname proved fitting both on and off the court. Just as he popped popcorn at work, he also had a knack for popping the nets with his smooth jump shot.
He continued his education at North Texas University before transferring and earning his pharmacy degree from Texas Southern University. It was at Texas Southern University that he met Sylvia Antoine, the love of his life, with whom he shared nearly 40 years of marriage. For close to four decades, Luther's career spanned two cities. He owned and operated Brotherton & Sons Pharmacy in Dallas which he built from the ground up. In Houston he shared his decades of wisdom by managing pharmacies and ensuring countless patients received the care they deserved.
Beyond his professional life, Luther cherished traveling, spending time with family and friends, and avidly watching sports. Most recently he found great joy in community excursions, connecting with others and embracing new experiences. His warmth, wisdom, and infectious laughter left a mark on all who knew him. To his grandchildren, he was affectionately known as "Daddy Luther," a cherished title passed down from one generation to the next.
Luther's soul was a beacon of warmth, his generosity a gift freely given. He was a man who loved deeply, gave selflessly, and touched the lives of all who knew him. He will be remembered not just for what he did, but for who he was: a kind, giving, and loving man whose presence lit up every room he entered. His memory will forever be cherished and etched into our hearts.
Luther is preceded in death by his beloved wife, Sylvia Brotherton; his parents, Luther Brotherton Jr. and Georgia Elizabeth Stone; his brother, Theadore Brotherton; and his sister, Marva Brotherton-Lary. He is survived by his children, Derek Brotherton (Nicole), Corey Brotherton (Brandi), and Kelvin Brotherton (Tiffany); his sisters, Hazel Brotherton-Cook (Kenneth) and Peggy Brotherton-Ford (Kenneth); and his cherished grandchildren, Darnell Brotherton, Ameer Brotherton, Blyss Brotherton, Keyairra Turner, Kelvin Brotherton Jr., Kameron Brotherton, Kennedi Brotherton, and Kaitlyn Brotherton.
