Lynnward Williams Obituary

Published by Ames Funeral Home, Inc. on Jun. 24, 2020.
Lynnward H. Williams, son of the late Augustus Williams and Blanche (Thomas) Williams, was called home to be with the Lord on June 24, 2020. Lynn was born on October 30, 1940, and he attended schools in Prince William County. He held various jobs in his youth, but he retired after 30 years of working in the government for Dewitt Army Hospital in Fort Belvoir. He received numerous awards during his career which was dedicated to food service and frequently claimed to be the best chef in our family. Lynn married his high school sweetheart, Dorothy Ann Kendall, on June 12, 1961. They were inseparable for over 47 years until she transitioned, and he would remind everyone that he missed his "baby" (Dottie) when she was gone. Lynn was a long time member of Ebenezer Baptist Church. He grew up in Ebenezer's historical site in Occoquan, and he was baptized there together with his wife and children on May 24, 1978. He was a recipient of the Ebenezer Eagle in 2006 for his dedicated Christian service. Lynn loved to sing in the choir and sang in various church groups over the years, but he remained an active member of the Robert "Pop" Middleton Male Chorus. He loved to fellowship with the men in the group, and he always had mints in his pockets for practices and church. Lynn was a mighty good man, an obedient and respectful son, a devoted husband, loving father, close brother, cherished uncle, true friend, and family role model. Lynn was hard working, kind, and respected by all. He enjoyed spending time with family and friends and loved to dance. If you held a family function that included horseshoes or a dance contest, he would be in the game and the first on the dance floor. He was good at both and frequently won bragging rights. Lynn took pride in his appearance and was known by all to be a sharp, dapper dresser. He had suits for every occasion and was extremely proud of the fact that he could still fit the ones from the eighties. He was also a man of many hats; he favored his collection of fedoras ranging from Stacy Adams to Panama Jack. Lynn's friendly personality and loving support will be missed by his family and friends. His children will especially miss his presence and prayers at Sunday dinners and family functions, his phone calls, his fatherly advice (solicited or not), his self-discipline and commitment to his exercise regimen, his adventures climbing ladders to remove leaves from his roof gutters, his familiar smell of Polo (green not blue) and Obsession, his warnings to "take your time, and slow down", and of course his love for Netflix. He enjoyed his retirement years and would stay up late watching movies and entire series. He loved his children and doted on his grandchildren and great grandchildren. He was a blessing to all who knew him, and he leaves behind a legacy full of cherished memories of a life well lived. Lynn was preceded in death by his wife Dorothy (Dottie Ann) and their infant daughter Victoria Ann; three brothers: Joseph Williams, John Williams, and Theodore Williams; two sisters: Mabel Coates and Bertie Perkins. He leaves to cherish his memories four devoted children: Daleria D. Person (Bryan), Lynnward H. Williams Jr., Lisa A. Williams-Cook (Johnnie) and Kim M. Campbell (Donato); one faithful brother: Augustus Williams (Luella); three loving sisters-in-laws: Marion Williams, Vivian Howard, and Joyce Ann Kendall; eight grandchildren; Lamarcus Gholston (April), Lynnette Pierce (Jonathan), Ashlee Abney (Quintin), Brittany Person, Aaron Person, Ryan Newkirk (Tamara), Jonathan Williams, and Johnnie Williams-Cook; 10 great grandchildren: Malakhi, Anthony, Tre'Miyah, JonQavis, Ja'Niyah, Cassandra, Brody, Riley, Ezekiel, and Ariel. Also sharing in this Homegoing Celebration is a host of loving cousins, nieces, nephews, in-laws, other relatives and special friends: to include the entire Ebenezer Baptist Church family. Acknowledgment The Williams Family would like to extend appreciation for the many acts of kindness shared with our family on behalf of Lynnward (Lynn) Williams. Your kindness, calls, expressions of sympathy and prayers are greatly appreciated. Your visits and cards have been comforting. The food and company that you provided during our time of mourning was a real blessing. Special Thanks to Deacon John Dangerfield, Deacon Allen, and Deacon Ken Aggrey. -Your kindness will be long remembered. Our collective hearts go out to the Williams' Family during their time of sorrow and weeping. Yet, the Word of God reminds us that our weeping and sadness may endure for the night, but our joy and gladness shall return in the morning. From: Pastor C.A.
