Mac Rutherford Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Jones Funeral Home - Winchester on Mar. 31, 2026.
Mac Stanford Rutherford II, 83, of Berryville, VA, passed away Thursday, March 26, 2026, at Rose Hill Health and Rehab.

Mac was born January 26, 1943, in Chattanooga, TN, the son of the late Mac Rutherford I and Elizabeth Casteel Rutherford. He was a graduate of Middle Tennessee State University and, following graduation, began his career as a sportswriter at the Nashville Tennessean before moving to the Winchester area to write for the Winchester Star newspaper.

A dedicated history buff, Mac held a special love for the Civil War era and participated in reenactment shooting competitions as a member of the N-SSA. During the 2000s, he shared this passion by publishing a Civil War magazine and authoring the book Historic Haunts of Winchester, which he brought to life for many years by organizing and leading local ghost tours. Beyond history, he was an avid sports fan, especially when it came to cheering his Tennessee college football and basketball teams to victory. His love of history and sports overflowed into a lifelong passion for reading, leading him to accumulate a large collection of books ranging from autobiographies to sports history

He is survived by his children, Tara Sfarnas (Steve) of Stephenson, VA, Trista Rutherford (J) of Winchester, Ian Rutherford (Shadiecsa) of Winchester; grandchildren, Landon, Hayden, Lillian, Wesley, and one more baby girl on the way; and his cousin who he grew up with, Josephine Jacobs.

All services will be private at this time.
