In Loving Memory of California native Madeline Augusta (Jacobsen) Carpenter, born December 15, 1918 in San Francisco, California to Dagny and Andrew Jacobsen. Madeline peacefully passed away on Tuesday, August 28, 2007 at Creston Village in Paso Robles, California where she had relocated in March of 2007 from her Terra Linda home. She was 88 years young, touched the hearts and lives of everyone she knew, and the loss of her physical presence will be immeasurable.
Madeline was raised in Pacific Grove at 915 Del Monte Avenue in the home built by her father, a contractor and Monterey County Supervisor (Mr. Monterey County) whose term of office as Chairman of the Board spanned 22 years from 1933 to 1955. Madeline spent many years accompanying Andy to political functions throughout the county. Her mother was a surgical nurse trained at Fabiola College in Oakland at the time of the Great San Francisco Quake of 1906. Madelines first schooling was in the home of Mrs. Zena Holman along with best friends Harriet Holman (Barter) and William Crowley. She spent many childhood summers at her grandmothers (Martina Bergersen, a Norwegian immigrant) homestead in Jolon and attended the Lockwood School for several months. Madeline graduated from Pacific Grove High School in 1937, the year she was also named Pacific Grove May Queen. She attended Hartnell College and was a graduate of Munsons Business College. In 1939 she married Chauncey Chan Carpenter, who was employed by RKO and Universal Pictures in San Francisco. During WWII, Madeline returned to the Monterey Peninsula to work at Fort Ord after her husband was sent overseas to New Guinea. Restarting their life after the war, they returned to San Francisco, later moving to San Anselmo and ultimately settling in Terra Linda (San Rafael) in 1959, her home for 48 years. Madeline and Chan were owners of Mutual Films Distributing, Inc. in San Francisco and the Encore Theatre in Burlingame.
After her husbands death in 1967, Madeline was offered the position as secretary to Dr. Carolyn Albrecht, Marin County Health Officer where she remained for 10 years until that position was eliminated. She then accepted a position with the County Auditors office until her retirement in 1980. In her youth, she was a member of Tau Mu of Monterey and a frequent model at Holmans Department Store. She was active in the Variety Club, Girl Scouts, a member of Sons of Norway Olav 82, was an accomplished pianist and organist, avid reader, gifted gardener, and devoted to her family and toy poodle, Bon-Bon.
Madeline was preceded in death by her husband Chauncey (1967), father Andrew B. Jacobsen (1955), brother Neil Jacobsen (1956), mother Dagny Jacobsen (1979), and sister Lucille Enderlin (1983). She is survived by her daughters Catherine Bartley and son-in-law Charles Bartley of Bradley, Deborah McPeak and son-in-law Donald McPeak of Graeagle, California, one granddaughter, Chandra Pivo, and her husband Richard Pivo of Sylmar, her brother-in-law Roy Enderlin and nephew Dean Enderlin of Calistoga.
