Madeline Thomas ObituaryMadeline Elizabeth Thomas, 64, of New London, Connecticut, passed away on May 20th surrounded by her loved ones.
Born on July 21, 1960, Madeline was the beloved daughter of Samuel and Delphinea Blackburn. She grew up in Waterford, CT and later went on to attend South Carolina State University, where she majored in Business Administration. It was during this time where she married her late ex-husband Wayne E. Thomas, with whom she had five children. They lived briefly in California where Wayne was stationed for his service in the U.S. Marines, and upon their return home to Connecticut Madeline began working at the Regional Multicultural Magnet School in New London, CT while raising their family. Known for her warm demeanor and kind spirit, she positively impacted many members of the RMMS community and emphasized the value of education.
Over the years, Madeline experienced many health challenges. In her late 30's she was diagnosed with a brain tumor, and due to medical error ended up needing a total of seven surgeries and to relearn how to do basic functions such as walking, talking, and reading. She suffered short-term memory loss from that point on but didn't let that stop her from eventually living a mostly independent life again. Later complications required yet another life saving surgery that resulted in her living in a nursing home for many years. Still, that did not break her undeniable spirit. She brought the same positivity and kindness to everyone she encountered at Harbor Village. Her faith in God gave her strength to continue to triumph. What she loved most was spending time with her children and grandchildren, and dark chocolate.
She is survived by her children, Danielle (and fiancé Tamir), Dimitri, Darien, Deaven, and Douglas (and wife Katherine), as well as her 10 beautiful grandchildren, Ma'Kai, Ahja, Zariah, Tamir Jr., Ava, Menalise, Micah, Dai'ja, Aurelio, and Evangeline, and an eleventh grandchild expected in August. Friends and family are welcome to attend the celebration of Madeline's life on Monday, June 2nd at Shiloh Baptist Church in New London, CT. Call time will start at 10am and the service will begin at 11am. The family asks that flowers be sent directly to the church and any donations in Madeline's memory be sent to her daughter Darien Thomas.
