In Loving Memory of Dr. Mae Lillie Simon

Dr. Mae L. Simon, a beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, devoted church member, and cherished matriarch, peacefully passed away on Tuesday, December 30, 2025, at the age of 83, surrounded by love. Born on December 27, 1942, in Norfolk, Virginia, "Nana" lived a life rooted in strength, grace, and unwavering devotion to her family and her church.

She was known for her prayers, sharp words, wisdom, humor, faith, kindness, and generosity, and her presence brought comfort and warmth to everyone she encountered. Family and church were the center of her world. She took pride in caring for and nurturing generations, always offering guidance, encouragement, and unconditional love. Her home was a place of gathering, laughter, and lasting memories.

Nana is survived by her loving children, Michael Simon, Cynthia Mitchell, and Sonya Valentine (Albert Valentine); grandchildren Charles Mitchell (Teena Mitchell), Caron Simon, Michael Simon Jr., Jeron Mitchell, Regina Simon, Jimmy Murdock (Shakia Murdock), Mikel Simon, and Mykaiah Simon; 20 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild. She is also survived by her honored son, Charles Mitchell Sr., and a beloved daughter, Melvinia Simon, along with a host of relatives, extended church family, and friends who will forever cherish her legacy.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Willie "Super" Simon; her brothers, Cleveland Lancaster and Charlie Lancaster III; her daughter, Debbie Short; and her granddaughters, Latricia Moseley, Marvis Gains-Stephens, and Marlayna Davis.

Though our hearts are very heavy, we are beyond grateful for the time we shared and the lessons she leaves behind. Her love will continue to live on through all who knew her.

A celebration of life will be held on Tuesday, January 13, 2026, at 11:00 a.m. at Jerusalem United Holy Church. Interment will follow at Woodlawn Funeral Services.

Repast will be at Luxury Affairs Events Center 4010 Victory Boulevard, Portsmouth, VA from 2:30 to 5:30 pm.
