Mae Subasic Obituary
Mae Beachler Subasic, 86, of Plum Borough, passed away peacefully with her family at her side on Wednesday, Aug. 21, 2024. Mae is survived by her beloved husband of 62 years, Raymond S. Subasic; loving mother of Kristine Subasic Nichols (William) and Raymond Subasic (Patricia); cherished grandmother of Will Nichols (Kelsey), Helena Nichols (Josh Slifkin), Raymond 'RJ' Subasic, Nicole Corneils, and Dana Baker; great-grandmother of Ruby Nichols, Malcolm Slifkin, Fiona Illar, Emily Schulte-Slifkin, and Lucy Schulte-Slifkin; dear sister of Marguerite 'Sis' Koch (Ted) and John 'Ed' Beachler, III (Darlene); sister-in-law of Edith Subasic; also survived by many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, John Edward Beachler, Jr., and Helen Milliken Beachler Scrima. Mae was a smart woman with diverse interests who had fun, attracted friends, defended her loved ones, helped those around her, and loved her family fiercely. A 1956 graduate of Aspinwall High School, she enjoyed a childhood playing with her sister, cousin Margie, and friends in the nearby woods and the town of Aspinwall, playing trumpet in the high school band and singing in the Cavalettes, and loved playing with her baby brother Ed. She took no guff from anyone and once beat up a neighbor boy who kicked her pregnant dog, Lassie. Mae was a 1959 graduate of the Presbyterian Hospital School of Nursing; she had a diverse and innovative career in that field, working in the first ICU at Presbyterian Hospital, the emergency room at Eye and Ear Hospital, visiting nursing, and nursing home administration. She also used her nursing skills to patch up neighbor kids' cuts and help with other health issues. Mae enjoyed 62 lively years of marriage to her husband Ray; they put everything into raising their children well and achieved their dream of owning a house at the top of a hill. Mae loved to read, with a special appreciation for mysteries. She loved animals and always had pets; including dogs, cats, birds, and even a horse. She was a skilled driver with a lead foot who enjoyed music, had a great sense of humor, and told hilarious stories at family holiday gatherings. While she didn't like housework or cooking, Mae made a mean batch of fudge and the world's best hot fudge sauce to put over ice cream. She never missed one of her children's school sports and arts events, even when they went away to college. She adored her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, who returned the affection. Mae will be sorely missed. The family will receive friends on Monday, Aug. 26, 2024, from 11 a.m. until the funeral service at 1 p.m. at the WEDDELL-AJAK FUNERAL HOME, 100 Center Ave., Aspinwall. Burial will follow at St. Mary Cemetery, O'Hara Township.
