Maeve Ellen Doherty passed away on January 1, 2025 at White Plains Hospital after a brief illness.
Maeve was born February 7, 1938 in New York City to her parents Robert J. Doherty and Jane Monahan Doherty. The family moved to White Plains in the early 1940's. Upon graduation from White Plains High School in 1956, Maeve received a full scholarship to Fashion Institute of Technology (F.I.T.) in New York City, where she pursued her lifelong dream of becoming a fashion designer. She was later married to the late Brian Perry of Yonkers, with whom she shared one child, her much loved daughter Megan.
Maeve was employed by Westchester County for more than 35 years working in various departments including Social Services, the former Sheriff's Department, and most notably in the County Executive's Office, where she worked under former County Executives Alfred Del Bello and Andrew O'Rourke. For many years she served as Mr. O'Rourke's confidential secretary, and many will remember her sitting behind the glass-walled antechamber to County Executive O'Rourke's office with her beautiful smile and endearing laugh, always happy to greet visitors with a kind word, and diligently proofread official correspondence with dictionary and thesaurus in hand.
Upon her retirement from Westchester County in 1998, she enjoyed going out with friends and family to Broadway and off-Broadway plays, as well as discovering new restaurants in both Manhattan and throughout Westchester County. She was always up for a car ride to nowhere, eager to discover new places to eat and shop. She loved spending time with her grandchildren Sitara and Ravi, who lovingly called her "Amma," and would frequently pick them up after school at Good Counsel Elementary and take them on adventures. Throughout her life, her love of fashion endured and she was always looking for great outfits to put together with perfect jewelry accents, for herself or for family and friends. She was also quick to compliment you if she admired what you were wearing.
Love of family was so important to Maeve; as the big sister she was always there to defend and protect her younger siblings. She was a devoted daughter to her parents, and a loving and dedicated single mom to her own daughter. She was the "fun aunt" to her eight nieces and nephews whenever she babysat, and her ability to spoil her grandchildren knew no bounds. She was known to all she met for her kindness, generosity and compassion.
Maeve is survived by her daughter Megan and son-in-law Deepankar Mukerji, and her siblings Dr. Robert J. Doherty, Heather O'Donnell, and Kevin Doherty (Susan). She is also survived by her beloved grandchildren Sitara and Ravi, as well as eight nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be held on Wednesday, January 15 at McMahon, Lyon and Hartnett Funeral Home, 491 Mamaroneck Avenue, White Plains, New York from 4 to 8 p.m. The funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. on Thursday, January 16 at Holy Name of Jesus Church, 2 Broadway, Valhalla, NY, with interment of ashes to follow at Gate of Heaven Cemetery in Mount Pleasant. In lieu of flowers, and to honor Maeve's love of animals, especially the cats she rescued and loved over the years, donations may be made to Paws Crossed Animal Rescue in Elmsford, New York.
