Major John Gilmore passed away peacefully on Wednesday, February 11, 2026, at the age of 93. He was born in Baton Rouge, Louisiana on August 29, 1932, to John Abner Gilmore and Maudell Gilmore. He began his career as an electrician and joined the United States Navy as an Electrician’s Mate Third Class on the USS Sperry, Catfish and Remora.
M.J. was a loving husband of 61 years, a father of four and a grandfather of five, and a comedian at heart. He loved to spend his days with friends and family, sharing stories over a cup of coffee.
M.J. was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Gladys Marie Gilmore; his sisters, Bobbie Lawrence and Alice Amacker; and his brothers, Darryl Gilmore and Robert Gilmore.
M.J. is survived by his daughters; Karen Caronna (Dennis), and Karla Smith (Eddie); his sons, Keith Gilmore (Chenell), and Kris Gilmore (Michelle); his siblings, Sharon Gilmore and Jimmy Gilmore; and his grandchildren, Alex Smith, Tyler Caronna, Jonah Smith, Jesse Caronna, and Sarah Gilmore; and his great- grandchildren, Evelyn Smith, Zoey Caronna and Tommy Caronna.
The family would like to invite all who knew and loved M.J. to join them as we commemorate his life. A visitation will be held at Resthaven Funeral Home, 11817 Jefferson Hwy., in Baton Rouge, on Saturday, February 14, 2026, from 1:30 PM until funeral services at 2:30 PM. Graveside services will follow at Resthaven Gardens of Memory.
