Obituary published on Legacy.com by Sioux Funeral Home from Dec. 18 to Dec. 23, 2025.
Christopher Wilson Eagle Hawk, Makasitomniyan Ho Nah'unpi, was born on July 17, 1947, in
Alliance, Nebraska, to George Ghost Dog and Lillian (Crazy Ghost) White Hawk. Chris was raised by his Uncle Raymond and Aunt Louisa (Cut Grass) Eagle Hawk. Christopher, known as Chris or Little Chris, made his journey, surrounded by family, to the spirit world on December 16, 2025, at Monument Health Hospital in Rapid City, SD.
Chris attended Oglala Community High School and the Institute of American Indian Arts (Santa Fe, NM) where he met the love of his life and wife of 58 years, Joyce (Suazo) Eagle Hawk. From this union, they welcomed 6 children.
In the 1970s, they moved their family to Manderson, South Dakota, to raise their family where he grew up. During this time, he started singing with the Red Cloud Singers and eventually started the drum group, Crazy Horse Singers with Leroy Looks Twice, Leon Grass, Richard "Dick" Elk Boy, Percy White Plume, Sam No Moccasin, "Sugar Bear" Red Cloud. He enjoyed traveling to numerous powwows with the drum group and his children who grew up in the powwow circle. He also enjoyed playing basketball with the Hawks as fast pitch and later took pride in watching his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren play.
In 1985, the family relocated to the Wind River Reservation in Wyoming and met many lifelong friends and family. During this time Chris obtained his business degree from the Central Wyoming College. At the beginning of 1991, Chris felt the desire to return to the Pine Ridge Reservation to be among his people of the Oglala Lakota Tribe. The family settled in
Oglala, SD where Chris began his service for the people and dedicating his life to Lakota teachings.
He stepped into eyapaha duties after being encouraged by Corneilous Kills Small and was involved in announcing for many community events, powwows, meetings, honoring's, etc. Chris was also involved with the Teca Wacipi Okolakiciye for 50 years, watching his children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren participate and doing eyapaya duties for many years. He was proud of the fact that 4 generations of his family participated by singing and dancing at these powwows. In addition to eyapaha duties on the reservation, he also was eyapaha for many other powwows such as Oglala Nation, Denver March Powwow, Kul Wicasa, among others. He also served on many educational boards, organizations, and powwow committees in addition to his many years of service working for the Oglala Sioux Tribe. Chris eventually became involved with the South Dakota Symphony Orchestra and collaborated with the Lakota Music Project providing guidance, advice, and storytelling.
He was many things to many people and impacted many lives but to us, he was Dad. The strong foundation that was built by our parents provided wisdom, strong values, and Lakota teachings for our future. He was a knowledge keeper who shared his teachings with many people, providing words of advice and encouragement to many who called him uncle, grandpa, friend, brother, and most of all sharing his humor and storytelling. He will be dearly missed by many who loved him.
