Maria Elena Vickers, a beacon of love and compassion, peacefully departed this world on January 27, 2026, in San Antonio, Texas. Born on December 19, 1949, in Mexico, Maria Elena lived a life rich in family and cherished moments, leaving an indelible mark on all who had the privilege to know her.
A gentle, loving, and caring soul, Maria Elena was a source of strength and joy for her family. She celebrated their victories with exuberance and stood by them in times of sorrow, embodying the true essence of love and support. Her spirit will forever be remembered in the hearts of her surviving family, her husband of over 50 years, Joseph Vickers, her beloved daughter, Rocio Vickers, and her deeply loved siblings: Jose Luis Varela, Beatriz Varela, Sofia Varela, and Teresa Varela. Maria Elena was also the proud grandmother of Melanie, Justin, Reyna, Destiny, Carlos, Cristofer, Madelyn, Iris, and Marco. She had the great joy of being a great-grandmother to Ronin, Remington, Justin Jr., Atticus, Eli, and Angelica, each of whom she held dear to her heart.
While life brought its share of heartache, with the passing of her cherished sister Luz Maria Torres, and brothers Carlos, Vicente, and Aurelio Varela, as well as her beloved daughter Cristina Vickers, Maria Elena remained a pillar of strength for her family. She had also experienced the sorrow of losing her niece, Alethea Davidson, and her parents, Jose and Guadalupe Varela, all of whom left her with sweet memories that she carried forth into her own motherhood and grand motherhood.
Maria Elena had a zest for life, finding joy in simple pleasures. She treasured every moment spent with her family, and her grandchildren were the light of her life. Maria loved indulging in delicious meals, particularly enjoying Chinese and Mexican cuisines, and she often spent her time immersed in the latest YouTube videos—seeking entertainment that brought laughter and warmth into her home.
Her legacy of love, gentleness, and laughter will be celebrated during her visitation on February 10, 2026, from 4:00 PM to 8:00 PM at South - Puente & Sons Funeral Chapels in San Antonio, Texas, concluding with a moving Rosary at 6:30 PM. A Mass honoring her life will be held on February 11, 2026, at 9:30 AM at St. Henry's Catholic Church, followed by her interment at Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery at 11:15 AM.
As we gather to remember Maria Elena Vickers, we hold close the countless memories, laughter, and love that she imparted to our lives. Though her physical presence has left us, her spirit and the values she instilled in all of us will forever remain as a guiding light. May she rest in peace, surrounded by the love of those who have gone before her.
