Born in Odessa, Texas, on November 11, 1961. He graduated from Ector High School, where he excelled as an all-district athlete in basketball, football, and track—an early reflection of his drive and determination.
Marcell pursued higher education at East Texas State University in Commerce, TX, and later earned his diploma in Respiratory Therapy from Odessa College. His career at Odessa Regional Medical Center was a testament to his dedication to the well being of others. He was friendly, loveable, kind, and giving. He never met a stranger.
Marcel was initiated as a member of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. April 9, 1981. He was especially proud to be a member of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc., embracing the values of brotherhood, leadership, and service that defined both his personal and professional life.
Marcell was preceded in death by his father Marcellous Garrett; his grandparents, Ruby and George Phillips; and his niece, Swaizee Bendross.
He leaves behind a legacy of love in his children—Straton Smith (Mansfield, TX), Taylan Smith (Canada); his devoted mother Bernice Smith (Odessa, TX); his granddaughter Rhys Marcella Smith (Mansfield, TX); his siblings Marsha Smith and Kevin Smith (Fort Worth, TX), Keith and Karen “Bunny” Smith (Pflugerville, TX); lifelong friend Becky Cliff (Odessa, TX)—along with a host of relatives and friends who will forever cherish his memory.
Visitation will be held Thursday June 26, 2025 from 1:00PM - 9:00PM at Martinez Funeral Home in Odessa, Texas.
A Celebration of Life is set for 1:00PM Friday June 27, 2025 at Bethlehem Baptist Church in Odessa, Texas.
Burial will take place at 11:00AM Tuesday July 1, 2025 in Timpson Antioch Cemetery in Timpson, Texas.
