Marcia Joy Hudson
A Life of Song, Travel, and Learning
Marcy Hudson was born Marcia Joy Pinfold in 1936 in Black Heath England to Ivy King and James Frederic Pinfold. By age 11, she and her family had survived The Blitz of World War II and made memorable passages to the United States where they were reunited in Lake Geneva, Wisconsin. Her life was forged by that welcome to the American Midwest and into the American dream.
Music & Education.
Marcia attended schools in both Wisconsin and Illinois and performed as a vocalist throughout her young life "singing her way to scholarship" through numerous paid and competitive solo venues on stages and church altars. She earned her bachelor's degree in English literature within the School of Music at the University of Illinois (Champaign/Urbana) and participated in the Select Touring University Choir. In 1978, Marcia earned her MS Ed degree from SUNY Cortland.
The English Language.
Marcy believed strongly in the power of education and the proper use of the English language, for which she held very high standards. She practiced these ideals, earning her advanced degree while raising three children, and became an educator. In that role, she conveyed her passion for language, teaching Spanish and building a curriculum that featured ancient Aztec culture. She deftly developed her curriculum into a grant-winning program, Foreign Language in the Open Classroom, which was distributed throughout New York State.
Dedication to Family & Community.
Versatile and opportunistic, Marcy's middle years brought further variety of success as an executive in the family firearms business with her former husband, Herbert E. Hudson, IV, with whom she shared 33 years of marriage. Undeterred in taking on traditional male roles, her focus, determination, and sense of civic duty extended to her community, where she trained with the New York Federation of Search and Rescue teams with her beloved German Shepherd, Magnum.
Love & Life.
As her children married, she sang at their weddings and produced a cherished CD of favorite selections. She enjoyed the freedom of travel and sightseeing throughout the United States, dedicating her final years to the care and company of her life partner. To him and all her loved ones, she conveyed a unique style of support and gentle instruction through impeccably phrased personal letters, exacting spoken word, and enduring presence. Her protective gaze and delight in clever conversation conveyed her intellectual grace and strident expectation that all overcome adversity to travel their life's journey to its fullest. Marcia beautifully chronicled her memoirs in a light-hearted unpublished work, "Silent Victory."
Marcy is predeceased by her significant other, John M. Baines; parents Ivy and Jim; and brother, Anthony Grant Pinfold. She is survived by her sister, Susan Vogler-Pinfold (Zürich, Switzerland); son Sean David Hudson (Colleen) of Buffalo, NY; daughters Deborah Joy Schultheiss (Arthur) of
Louisburg, NC and Wendy Starr Hudson (Steve) of LeGrand, IA; six grandchildren (Adam, Danielle, Samantha, Leah, Kyle, and Matthew); and three great grandchildren. She passed away peacefully on the morning of September 17, 2024, in
Louisburg, North Carolina. A Celebration of Life will be held at the discretion of the family.
