I met Madame Powell in her French class at the Shepherd's Center in Richmond. I enjoyed her classes very much. She was strict in a loving way and was so very knowledgeable in many areas. During one lesson, in order to practice French, she asked each of us to tell her our birthday in French. When I told her mine was November 17th, she stopped a little and said: That is also my birthday!" So from then on we celebrated our birthdays together every year, even after she retired from Shepherd Center. We went to a restaurant and talked about many things, our life, our views, our family.....etc.
It is now November 2009, I just called her a few minutes ago, and her phone was disconnected. I panicked and called the office, I knew deep down that I was too late this year. Last year was the last time we were together.....when she told me not to forget to meet on our next birthday. But, dear Marcia, you are not here this November...you have left without telling me....
Marcia, I really miss you so very much... I will think of you on our birthday and will celebrate your wonderful life, your gifts to all who had been in touch with you...
You will always live in my heart, dear Marcia, rest in peace.
My heartfelt condolences to all the family.
Love,
Vivien Chen

Dear John, Sarah, and Morris. We were so sad today to hear of your mother's passing. She taught me French at Collegiate, and though I was never able to speak the language, she always praised my hard work and made me feel good about myself - she was that kind of teacher. I remember that whenever I saw her as a teenager visiting your house or at an event, she was always welcoming and warm. My memories of her are fond and lovely, and I hope your memories of her will always be a blessing to you. My deepest sympathies, and you all are in my thoughts and prayers tonight. With love, Jane

John, Although we didn't know Marcia, we know she must have been an amazing woman to have such a great son. She passed on our 14th wedding anniversary! We will remember her in our prayers. Our sympathy, Tony and Jackie AVila

I had the great privilege to know Marcia for a number of years. She was an exceptional woman, respected by so many. Her vast knowledge of such a wide variety of topics put us all in awe of her. Her willingness to share so many of her life experiences set her apart. She will be missed, but never forgotten.
My sympathy goes out to her family and friends.

John , I am so sorry to hear this sad news, your mom was an inspiration to all of us. I remember her excellent sense of humor and lighthearted spirit. She and I always had a good time in french class, and I was only mad at her once- when she insisted I cut my hair in 7th grade!
My thoughts and prayers are with you now. Fondly, Paul
