Marcia Young Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Dahlstrom Funeral Home - Oakes on Nov. 3, 2025.
Marcia Mae, daughter of Max and Minnie (Bethke) Hartwig was born on July 17, 1928 on the family farm near Edgeley, North Dakota where she grew up during the depression years. She told many stories about growing up with her 3 brothers and riding horse to school. Marcia graduated from Edgeley High School in 1946 and then went onto Iowa State University, graduating with a degree in Home Economics Education. She taught several years and then met John (Scoop) Young at a country dance. Scoop and Marcia were married August 17, 1952 in Edgeley North Dakota.

They settled on a farm near Berlin, ND where they farmed for 50 years constantly making improvements to the farmstead and enjoying the peaceful rural life. They retired to LaMoure, ND in 1997. Marcia kept busy gardening, sewing, golfing, playing cards, and participating in musical events. At the close of the Vietnam War, Marcia and Scoop adopted two Vietnamese orphans. Than John arrived in December of 1969 at the age of 3 years old and Ahn Lee in April of 1970 at 4 months. They brought much joy into their lives. Marcia later moved to Fargo ND and resided at Eventide Assisted Living.

Marcia was a very proud grandma and loved being involved in her grandkids' lives and events. She constantly kept up with current events and could carry on a conversation with anyone and was the "life of the party." Marcia loved music and dancing. She was a Republican to the end.

Marcia always kept a "bucket list" of things she did and would like to do. She was able to check quite a few off her list, including a 3 month boat ride to Europe in 1951 with a group of teachers, traveling several times to Washington D.C., Arizona, Colorado, New York City, a hot air balloon ride, 1980 trip to Germany to visit cousins, a 2014 trip to Vietnam with grandson Andrew, and a 2017 family trip to New Zealand where Marcia enjoyed sky diving. Marcia was always the first to jump up for an adventure, but every time she returned from one of her trips, she was heard to say, "I'm glad I was born in good ole' North Dakota."

Marcia died on November 3, 2025, in Fargo ND. She was 97 years old.

Marcia is survived by one son, Than (Charlotte Mathern) Young; one grandson, Andrew (Jeremy) Young; three granddaughters, Mikayla (Sam) Schumacher, MiaLara (Michael) Whitney, and Alyssa Young; great-granddaughters, Mari Mae Young and Vivian Jo Schumacher; great-grandsons, Jaylen Thomas and Jameson John Whitney; and many beloved nieces and nephews.

Marcia was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Scoop; daughter, Anh Lee Young; grandson, Marcus James Young; granddaughter, Alexa Jo Young; and three brothers, Laurie, Robert, and Horace Hartwig.

The funeral will be held at 10am on November 11, 2025 at St. John Lutheran Church (1710 5th St S Fargo, ND 58103) with burial at the Berlin Cemetery to follow at 2:30pm. Marcia's service will be live streamed on her obituary page.
