Marcus Brummer Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Oct. 31, 2018.
Marcus Alexander Brummer died on October 15, 2018 in Waltham, MA at age 49. He was born on May 24, 1969, son of the late S. Barry Brummer and the late Kathleen Dorothy Nora (Poulter) Brummer.

Marcus grew up in Wayland, attending the Pincushion Hill/Eliot Montessori School in Natick, MA and the Cotting School in Lexington, MA.

Marcus leaves behind his siblings Simon Brummer who lives with his wife Julie in Lancaster, Jennie Brummer and her fiancé, Christopher Ives, of Auburn, and Heather Brummer who lives with her husband Jeff Eichstedt in Lake Stevens, WA. He is also survived by his uncle Phil Poulter and his wife, Pat, of Burgess Hill, England, and his Aunt Farida (Brummer) Turner of Elstree, England and many cousins.

He was "Uncle Marcus" to Jennifer Blocher and her daughter Kiera of Auburn, to Rob Blocher and his fiancée Alison Rollins of Worcester and to Merry, Gabby and Elia Brummer of Lancaster.

Marcus was an incredibly sweet soul, who loved to bowl, travel and was an avid Boston sports fan. He had an amazing capacity to recall statistics, and really an amazing capacity to remember anything and everything. He acted as the family historian, recalling dates, names, times and even the weather of family events from long ago. Whenever people got stuck, inevitably someone would say, "Marcus will know." Birthdays, anniversaries, important events, you could count on a card and a phone call from Marcus. We will miss his caring attention.

Marcus was a fighter, with an independent spirit that never quit. He overcame enormous odds early in his life, defying the predictions for his physical and mental capabilities. He graduated Massachusetts Bay Community College with a certificate in Word Processing and lived in his own apartment for his entire adult life. While his health wouldn't permit him to pursue his career to the extent that he desired, in true "Marcus" fashion, he never stopped wishing he was able to work. Marcus faced his limitation with a sense of honesty and realism, always focusing his energy and attention on what he could do. His patience was limitless.

In many ways Marcus lived boldly, traveling both domestically and internationally on his own. He was almost always willing to try new things and have new experiences. He was quick to laugh and generous with his friendship.

A celebration of life for Marcus will be held at the First Parish Unitarian Church of Waltham, 50 Church Street, Waltham, MA on Dec. 1, 2018 from 11:00am 1:00pm. All are welcome. Please join us for refreshments and story-telling. Also, please remember Marcus as you root on the Pats, the Celts, and the Bruins. And the family would like to send a big thank you to the World Champion Boston Red Sox for winning in Marcus' honor. We would love to hear from anyone with a Marcus story in the online guestbook; please feel encouraged to leave your contact information there. In Marcus' memory, please extend a random kindness to a stranger or call an old friend or family member out of the blue. And for our fellow travelers, have patience. Limitless patience.

My condolences to Marcus's family, especially his siblings. I met Marcus in the 1970s when my mother helped with the patterning sessions. I remember him always being in a good mood and smiling. Such a positive kid and from what I later heard from my mother, such a determined fighter/hard-worker. Admirable.

I only knew Marcus for a few years, but the moment I met him I was greeted with a huge smile. His ability to care for people was extraordinary along with his outward compassion. The Blocher family is truly full of special people, and Marcus will be missed by all.

I remember his spunk as a kid. Everyone loved Marcus. He was my math tutor. He was so good at math....Love and prayers to the family. Marcus's spirt is not forgotten.

Marcus was a gentleman in every sense of the word. Pat and I have particularly fond memories of his stay with us in England many years ago.
