Marcus Schuchs Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Nov. 28, 2025.
Marcus R. Schuchs, Jr., 78, passed away at Athens Piedmont Hospital on 9 November 2025 after a long battle with cancer.

Marcus was a loving husband, father and grandfather. A native of Ferriday, Louisiana, he was a graduate of Louisiana Tech University and the University of Louisiana - Monroe with degrees in Forestry and Business Administration. He was a veteran and served for eight years in the Army National Guard. Moving to Madison, Georgia in 1979, he was a Forest Manager, Economist and Tax Analyst, a real estate agent and business owner. He served his community through the Madison Downtown Business Council (former President), the Rotary Club (former President), as a Morgan County Tax Assessor and as a founding member of the St. James Catholic Church. He was a certified Master Gardener and loved oil painting, working with stained glass and brewing beer and wine.

Later in life, he was delighted to reunite with his birth mother, Willie D. Thames of Gulfport, Mississippi. After being an only child, he gained two brothers and two sisters to love and joke around with.

He was preceded in death by his amazing wife of 53 years, Julie, and his devoted parents, Marcus and Doris Schuchs. He is survived by his children, Colonel (Ret) Elizabeth Schuchs-Gopaul of San Antonio, Texas and Marcus Schuchs III (BJ) of Madison, Georgia; and his grandchildren, Charlie Gopaul, Adalyn Schuchs, Evan Gopaul, Hudson Schuchs, Grayson Schuchs and Everly Schuchs.

Marcus' life will be remembered at a 10:00 Mass on Saturday, 6 December 2025, at St. James Catholic Church in Madison, Georgia, followed by a reception in the hall. He will be buried in a private ceremony at Honey Creek Woodlands at the Monastery of the Holy Spirit. In lieu of flowers, please donate to the St. Vincent de Paul Society at 562 Vine Street, Madison Georgia 30650; a charity that helps local community members in their time of need regardless of faith.
