My twin, Carol, and I spent our childhood with the Hogan sisters on Chestnut St. I'm sad that we've lost touch over the years, but you all have a special place in my heart!

Memories of my Grandmother Peggy

The house belonging to my grandparents on Gull Lake provided a constant for my family as we traveled and moved every two or three years while my father served in the Army. Peggy and John Hogan opened their home up to us often and it became a familiar, joyful place to gather for vacations and holidays.

Peggy loved sports. She not only loved watching them, she knew statistics and the player's names and history. I remember her avidly watching golf and basketball and calling the players her boys. She was keenly intelligent and seemed to have a fantastic memory for facts.

I remember fondly that my grandmother encouraged me to read. She introduced me to the novels of James Herriot which I devoured as a young animal lover. I also remember that she gave me a copy of The Borrowers to read and explained the story to me in detail. She seemed eager to discuss the books after I read them.

Peggy taught me how to do laundry while in the basement of the lake house. I am not sure how old I was, but I have a vivid memory of a broom handle stick by the washer and she showed me how to push the clothes down in the water to get the air bubbles out.

There was alway hard candy in the glass dish in the lake house and Peggy would offer it to all of the grandchildren. It was usually lemon drops and we looked forward to being offered to carefully lift the lid and take a treat.

I remember that when I went back to college for a job in the medical field at 30 years old that Peggy seemed proud and had encouraging words to offer. She engaged me in conversation and told a few stories from when she was a nurse.

I have a tender memory as a child when Peggy took me to the sink and taught me to let cold water run on my hands and wrists to cool down on a hot summer day. I still remember how her hands looked under the water.

I am grateful to have shared in your life. You will be missed. Your loving granddaughter, Colleen
