Margaret Barbara (Bucholz) Mattfeld, 90, passed away peacefully with family by her side, on Friday, August 1, 2025, at Perham Living.
Margaret was born on October 4, 1934, to Joseph and Frances (Waldorf) Bucholz in Edna Township near Perham, MN. She graduated from Perham High School in 1952. On August 10, 1957, she married Alvin Mattfeld, and they celebrated 67 years of marriage.
Most of her career was spent working as a bookkeeper at the Perham Cooperative Creamery. She was also employed by Perham Cooperative Oil and for a few years co-owned the Tastee Freez. After her official retirement from the creamery, she loved volunteering at the Perham Living Gift Shop and served as Pine Lake Township Clerk. She wrapped up her working years with many seasons at The Bean Mill.
Margaret and Alvin were avid bowlers and bowled on the Tuesday night mixed doubles league in Perham for decades. It is difficult to find a bowler in the Perham area that has not bowled with Margaret. She bowled on numerous local leagues, served as secretary for many of those leagues, and loved traveling to bowling tournaments. She also had many other hobbies. Some of her favorites were flower and vegetable gardening, baking, playing cards, and cross stitching. If Margaret knew your favorite dessert, she would find an occasion to make it for you. Her famous Sally Ann cookies were a hit at all the bake sales. She and Alvin enjoyed fishing and caught many a walleye on Big Pine Lake.
Faith was important to Margaret, and she was an active member of St. Stanislaus Catholic Church and then St. Henry’s Catholic Church in Perham. She served the church on many committees. She loved her family deeply and enjoyed being a mom, grandma, and great grandma.
She is survived by her husband Alvin; son Randy (Lori) of Perham, MN; daughters Brenda (Chuck) Sprenger of Grey Eagle, MN, and Sonia (Mike Specht) Strickland of Princeton, MN; grandchildren Kayla (Matt) Hagfors, Nicole Mattfeld, Haley (Gabrielle) Sprenger, Karly (Dylan) Wilkie, and Cody (Elizabeth) Sprenger; great grandchildren Addie, Lila, Luka, Decker, Boaz, and Berdina; brother Richard (Carol) Bucholz of Perham and many nieces and nephews.
Margaret is preceded in death by her parents; sister Grace Baumgart; and brother Donald Bucholz.
A special thanks is extended to Perham Living for their service and care for Margaret in the final year of her life.
