Margaret Moore Stouffer
Not long after celebrating her 100th birthday on July 22, 2022, Margaret Moore Stouffer (known as Peg) died at Concordia of the South Hills in Mt. Lebanon PA on November 9, 2022. Peg Stouffer was a native Pittsburgher and lived virtually all her life in or around Pittsburgh. Her family's roots in the Knoxville section of Pittsburgh go back to the 19th century. Her father was George V. Moore, a lawyer and veteran of the First World War who was a judge on the Alleghany County Court of Common Pleas and later in private practice. Peg's mother, Anna Jones Moore, was the daughter of William A. Jones, a Presbyterian Minister who was pastor at the Knoxville Presbyterian Church and later the First Presbyterian Church in Pittsburgh. Peg graduated from South Hills High School in 1939 and from Oberlin College in 1943 after which she married Dr. Harry Schauffler of Buffalo. After their divorce, she moved back to Knoxville and then to Mt. Lebanon. In 1961, she married Bill Stouffer who was a Vice President at Jones and Laughlin Steel Company. After his death, she moved to Concordia at South Hills. She has one son, William Schauffler of Wellesley, MA and a granddaughter, Alexandra Schauffler of Washington DC. She has stepdaughters, Mary Lucas, Leslie Troy, and the late Judy Thomas. Blessed with a long, healthy, and full life, Peg has seven step grandchildren, 11 great grandchildren, and three great great grandchildren living in Pennsylvania, Ohio, and California among other places. For many years, both Peg and Bill Stouffer were active in the Sharon Community Presbyterian Church in Moon Township. When she moved to Concordia, she joined the Mt. Lebanon Methodist Church. She has been a passionate supporter of the Pittsburgh Symphony, attending many concerts until recently. She was a regular attendee at Carnegie Museum travel lectures and also supported the Senator John Heinz History Center, the Pittsburgh History and Landmarks Foundation, and the Western Pennsylvania Conservancy. At one time, Peg was a highly proficient jewelry maker and gave many of her creations to her friends. In later years, Peg became famous for sending clippings of newsworthy items to friends and family members whether they wanted them or not. She became a dedicated swimmer when she spent her summers at the family cottage near Dunkirk, NY on Lake Erie. In later years she couldn't wait for the Dormont pool to open. Even after moving to Concordia, and until recently she stayed active and involved. In 2007 and again in 2011 the Resident Council at Concordia recognized Peg with an award for her " Commitment & Energy to the Enhancement of Lifestyle at the Concordia Community." At her Covid subdued 100th birthday party this July, Peg expressed her gratitude for how fortunate and blessed she has been with her family, friends, church, and Pittsburgh roots. Following her wishes, a private burial service will be held at Mt. Lebanon Cemetery. Memorial services will be planned for a future date. Donations in her memory may be made to any of the local organizations which meant so much to her.Arrangements entrusted to the Leo J. Henney Funeral Home, Carnegie. www.leohenneyfuneralhome.com
