Margaret Ann Washington

Margaret Ann Washington, a beloved mother and friend, passed away peacefully at home, surrounded by her children, on October 6, 2025. Born on July 18, 1945, in Waldorf, Maryland, Margaret’s life was a tapestry woven with love, laughter, and joy.

Margaret dedicated over 30 years of her life as a Mail Processing Clerk with the United States Postal Service before retiring. Her work was a testament to her strong work ethic and commitment — qualities that defined her character both in and out of the workplace. She was educated in the Charles County Public Schools, where she proudly received her high school diploma.

Those who knew Margaret knew her as a woman with a big heart, overflowing with love and kindness. She was a loving and caring mother to Darlene (Dean) Janey, Sylvia (Sherwin Sr.) Thomas, Marilyn (Roosevelt) Swann, Sherry, Karen, Frances, John (Franklin) Washington, Jr., and bonus daughter Felicia Hagens. Margaret’s warmth extended to her family, including her siblings Florence Pickeral (brother-in-law Richard) and Kathryn Napper, along with a host of nieces, nephews, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, relatives, and friends who adored her deeply.

In her later years, Margaret spoke her mind with unapologetic honesty, earning her the endearing reputation of a “hip shooter” among those close to her. She cherished the simple pleasures of life — finding joy in bowling, bingo, playing cards, and especially in games of Phase 10 with her grandchildren. Her love for food was notably evident in her enjoyment of crabs and her all-time favorite, Butter Pecan ice cream.

Margaret’s proudest accomplishment was her enduring marriage to the late John Francis Washington Sr., with whom she shared 41 wonderful years. Together, they created a family filled with love and laughter. Margaret was also baptized at St. Peter's Catholic Church at a young age, marking the beginning of her faith journey — an essential part of her life.

Margaret is preceded in death by her husband, John Francis Washington Sr.; her mother, Mary Irene Hagens; her sister, Mary Evelyn Hagens; and her brother, Stephen Leroy Hagens. She leaves behind a legacy of love, compassion, and cherished memories that will continue to inspire and bring warmth to the hearts of all who knew her.

A visitation will be held in her honor on October 21, 2025, from 9:30 AM to 10:30 AM at St. Michael's Catholic Church, located at 17510 Horsehead Rd, Brandywine, MD. This will be followed by a Celebration of Life from 10:30 AM to 11:00 AM and a Mass from 11:00 AM to 12:00 PM. Margaret will then be interred at Resurrection Cemetery in Clinton, MD, with the service commencing at 1:30 PM.

As we reflect on the life of Margaret Ann Washington, let us remember her laughter, her unwavering love, and the beautiful family she nurtured. Though she may no longer be with us in body, her spirit and the love she shared will forever remain in our hearts.
