Margarett Marie Smith of Kalamazoo, Michigan, died on February 6, 2024, at the age of 70. Margarett was born in Tupelo, Mississippi, on May 22, 1953, to the late Henry and Lizzie (Dobbs) Smith.
Margarett spent her childhood in a caring home with her parents, brothers, and a sister, as the family moved from Mississippi to Michigan. She graduated in the Class in 1971 from Kalamazoo Central High School. She was a certified nurse assistant and she also worked at Kalamazoo College and the Northside Association for Community Development (NACD).
Margarett’s religious home was the Galilee Baptist Church in Kalamazoo, and she had previously been a pastor's aide and youth leader at the Greater Faith Fellowship in Kalamazoo. Once she joined the church, she never wavered in her faith in Jesus Christ.
Margarett was very warm hearted, caring, and loving, and she loved to prepare delicious home-cooked meals and desserts, for both friends and family alike. She had a flair for Southern-inspired cuisine, much appreciated by all. Her friends and family of multiple generations loved to attend holiday gatherings she hosted in the comfort of her own home. Fun and laughter resounded until the last guest left.
We are very proud of the love and kindness that she showed throughout her life, and Margarett will be missed by all of those she loved, cared for, or had an impact upon, even as we rejoice that she has gone onto her eternal reward.
Margarett is survived by her brother, Zeamon Smith; nephew, Rick Garrison; nieces, Jaquetta Garrison, Vanessa Crump, and Jennifer Smith; goddaughter, Maigann Brooks; godson, Taylor Bailey; great-nephews, Cortez Truitt, Monterio Smith, and Demarcus Smith; great-niece, Rikki Garrison; and one great-godson and two great-goddaughters, Phoenix Bailey, Myah Crosby, and Zariah Crosby. We thank Ascension Borgess Hospital, Langeland Family Funeral Homes, and Galilee Baptist Church for her final care on earth.
Margarett was preceded in death by her parents; sister, Brenda Smith; and two brothers, Charles Smith and William Smith.
Visitation is being held at Galilee Baptist Church, 1216 North Westnedge Avenue, Kalamazoo, Michigan, on Tuesday, February 20 at 10:00 am, with memorial service to follow at 11:00 am. To leave an online condolence, please visit https://www.langelands.com.
