Margie Kay (Morasch) Self died at the age of 76 at Spring Hill Care & Rehab surrounded by loved ones on Thursday, February 5, 2026. She was born in
Kansas City, Kansas on July 15, 1949, to Norman Morasch and Marjorie (Lancaster) Morasch.
Margie always enjoyed late night sundaes with her older brother, Gary, and was a fierce protector of her younger brother, Charley. She played the cello in school, but may have been encouraged to keep the bow from touching the strings during concerts. During her school age years, she was an avid member of Job's Daughters International, a masonic youth organization for girls and young women. She graduated from Wyandotte High School in 1967. Margie obtained her Associate of Arts from Johnson County Community College in 1988 and then her Bachelor of Mathematics from Mid-America Nazarene College in 1990.
She married John Filmer on November 25, 1967. John joined the Navy before their marriage and in the summer of 1968 they went to Japan for 2 ½ years. Margie flew out after John and had packed her purse full of silverware, leaving everyone already seated ducking their heads to dodge her heavy clanging bag as she walked down the aisle. Their marriage was blessed with one daughter, Laura Kay, while they were living in Emporia, Kansas. They later divorced in 1995.
Margie's first job was at Fritz's Drive-In. She started working as an operator at Southwestern Bell while still in high school and continued to work for them while in Pensacola, Florida, for John's training in the Navy. After Japan, they moved to Emporia, Kansas, where she returned to Southwestern Bell. Margie held different positions throughout her 31 year career with the company that became AT&T and retired as a supervisor in 2000. Later, she worked for KC Bindery with her second husband Jay Self.
James Self and Margie were married in 2006. They enjoyed many years in their home in North Kansas City before moving to
Ottawa, Kansas in 2018. There were many summer vacations spent at Osage Beach, Missouri where they both enjoyed family time spent together playing on the water.
Margie was a member of the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks Lodge #803 in
Ottawa, Kansas since 2019. She also played pool in the North East Kansas APA since 2018. Margie originally played APA in Kansas City earlier in life and loved to talk about beating a 7 who neer saw her coming. She introduced her daughter to APA and they played together on a team out of Joe's Standard Bar in downtown Kansas City. She was a sassy spunky woman who would dance around the pool table while shooting if you played her favorite songs. Margie played many a card game with family, kicked shins on the indoor soccer field, coached the best soccer team that just happened to roster her daughter, bowled with flare, and kept everyone guessing as to what she would do or say next. Margie was a fireball of feistiness that livened up any room she entered. She loved the color red and anything with bling. You would often find her in Chiefs or Royals attire when she was rooting for her favorite teams with friends.
Margie was preceded in death by her father Norman Morasch, her mother Marjorie Morasch, husband Jay Self, brother Gary Morasch, sister-in-law Nina Morasch, sister-in-law Patty Morasch and niece Rachael Morasch.
She is survived by her brother Charley Morasch, sister Cyndi Morasch Johnson, brother-in-law and sister-in-law Phil & Debbie Self, her daughter and son-in-law Laura and Kerry Toomey, step-daughter Megan Sander, step-son Ryan Self, step-grandson Zach McSwane, granddaughter Abby Toomey and numerous nieces and nephews, grand nieces and nephews, and great grand nieces and nephews.
