Maria Elena de Cortez

Maria Elena Serrato de Cortez, 82, passed away on December 4, 2025, in Salinas, California. She was born on August 8, 1943, in Acuitzeramo, Michoacán, Mexico, to Juan Serrato and Maria Inez Melgoza. In 1980, Maria immigrated to the United States with her husband, Raúl Cortez, and their three older children, José Alfredo, Yolanda, and Álvaro making Salinas their home. Throughout her life, Maria worked with dedication in the fields, particularly in onion harvests and artichoke factory, always showing the strength, humility, and perseverance that defined her.

Maria is survived by her four children: José Alfredo, Yolanda, Álvaro, and Leticia; and her three granddaughters: Jasmine, Valerie, and Kamila, all of whom she loved deeply. She is also survived by her two brothers Juventino and Doroteo Serrato.

Known for her loving, caring, and gentle spirit, Maria found joy in life's simple moments, spending time with her family and watching her novelas. Her familiar sayings, "pues no sé", "pues si tu dices" and "ay contigo," will forever remain cherished memories in the hearts of those who knew her.

Funeral Services:Viewing will be held on December 18 from 1:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m., followed by the Rosary from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.Mass will take place on December 19 at 10 a.m. at Cristo Rey. Burial will follow at Queen of Heaven.

Maria's presence was a source of comfort and love, and her memory will remain a blessing toher family and all who had the privilege of knowing her.

Nació el 8 de agosto de 1943 en Acuitzeramo, Michoacán, México, hija de Juan Serrato y María Inez Melgoza. En 1980, María emigró a los Estados Unidos junto con su esposo, Raúl Cortez, y sus tres hijos mayores, José Alfredo, Yolanda y Álvaro, estableciendo su hogar en la ciudad de Salinas. A lo largo de su vida, trabajó con dedicación en el campo, especialmente en la cosecha de cebolla yalcachofa, demostrando siempre la fortaleza, la humildad y la perseverancia que la definían.

María deja en vida a sus cuatro hijos: José Alfredo, Yolanda, Álvaro y Leticia; y a sus tres nietas: Jasmine, Valerie y Kamila, a quienes amaba profundamente. También la sobreviven sus dos hermanos Juventino y Doroteo Serrato.

Conocida por su espíritu amoroso, cariñoso y tranquilo, María encontraba alegría en los momentos sencillos: convivir con su familia y ver sus novelas. Sus expresiones tan queridas "no sé", "pues si tu dices" y "ay contigo" permanecerán como recuerdos entrañables en los corazones de quienes la conocieron.

Servicios fúnebres:La velación se llevará a cabo el 18 de diciembre, de 1:00 p.m. a 6:00 p.m., seguida del Rosario de 6:00 p.m. a 8:00 p.m.La misa será el 19 de diciembre a la 10 a.m. en Cristo Rey. El sepelio tendrá lugar posteriormente en Queen of Heaven.

La presencia de María fue siempre un consuelo y un símbolo de amor. Su memoria permanecerá como una bendición para su familia y para todos los que tuvieron el privilegio de conocerla.
