HAMMOND, IN – Formerly of East Chicago, IN, Maria Refugio "Cuca" Flores, age 94, passed away peacefully at home surrounded by those that loved her on Sunday, October 19, 2025.
Beloved wife of the late Heriberto Flores; she is survived by her loving children Heriberto (Oralia) Flores, Norma (Manuel S.) Sanchez, Armando (Robin) Flores, Arturo (Doreen) Flores, Marisa (Oscar) Muñoz; thirteen grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
She is preceded in death by her parents, Librado and Mercedes Torres, and her three sisters, Dolores Torres, Ofelia Duran, and Chela Navarro, and one brother, Jesus Torres.
She was born in Guadalajara, Jalisco, Mexico, and came to this country in 1958 after marrying Heriberto.
She was proud to become a U.S. citizen in July of 1993.
She loved to cook for her family and enjoyed being surrounded by her children and grandchildren.
She enjoyed the holidays, knowing her family would gather to celebrate together.
She loved to travel with her husband and visit her extended family in Mexico.
A wonderful storyteller, her family enjoyed hearing all the added embellishments with every iteration of a story. She was the center of a family that will miss hearing her laugh and her gift of gab.
The family would like to thank Estela and Cynthia, her beloved caregivers that they grew to love as one of the family. Her family is very thankful for all the help they received from the staff at Hospice of Calumet.
A visitation will be held on Sunday, October 26 from 2:00-6:00PM at Burns Kish Funeral Home 8415 Calumet Ave, Munster, IN.
Services will be on Monday, October 27, 11AM at St. Patrick's Church 3802 Grand Blvd. East Chicago, IN.
Burial to follow at St. John St. Joseph Cemetery Hammond, IN.
