Maria (Mary Ann) Kelly Metzger left this world to be with our Lord and Savior on December 15, 2023. She had been suffering from dementia.
Maria was born in Butte County South Dakota, the second child of John R. Kelly and Maria (Mary) Brazer Kelly on March 20, 1938. Her family moved to Laurel in 1948 where she graduated from high school and went on to college at Eastern Montana College to become a teacher. She taught art and in later years attained her master's degree from Montana State University in Bozeman and became a principal.
Maria met and started a romance with Marvin J. Metzger whom she married on June 9, 1956. They had two children, Louis (Buddy) Duane Metzger and Lynette Chistine Metzger Myrstol. Marvins's career as a truck driver for the railroad lead to a move to Glendive where they lived for two years. They moved back to Laurel and bought a house on the square butte between Laurel and Park City where they lived, and the kids attended school and graduated from Laurel High School.
Maria was a kind, loving, considerate and giving person. She was a gracious host who loved to entertain and was too nice for her own good. She loved children and adored her grandchildren as they could do no wrong. She would do anything for them. She and Marvin loved to include them on their frequent camping trips. She loved traveling and camping and was quite the bird watcher. She had several bird feeders on her patio. She also enjoyed calligraphy, reading, and dabbled in genealogy. Other hobbies included quilting and cross stitching.
Maria was preceded in death by her parents, her younger sister Bertha, brothers Bobby and Johnny and her beloved husband Marvin. Survivors include her brother David and sister Donna Rae, her children Buddy and Lynette, grandchildren Annie Beth, Jacob, Benjamin, Kaitlyn, Bobby and great grandchildren Braydon, Darla, Austin, Royce and Harper.
A memorial service will be held on January 25th at noon at Our Savior's Lutheran Church in Laurel.
