Maria L. Spaulding, 72, of Ocala, FL, passed away peacefully on Ash Wednesday, February 18, 2026, with her loving husband, Bud, by her side at Hospice of Marion County.
Maria was a gifted chef, known for her culinary skills and warm, welcoming nature. In her younger years, she owned an ice cream parlor and then worked with a distinguished group of top-tier chefs in her native Southampton, NY, and even had the opportunity to travel with them to the prestigious Breakers Hotel in Palm Beach. Her passion for food and service stayed with her throughout her life. After moving to Ocala, Maria worked at Publix Supermarkets, where she earned numerous accolades and was consistently recognized for her exceptional service. She built strong relationships with her customers, knowing all by name, whom she regarded as family where she took great joy in helping others.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Jim and Mae McAvey, as well as her brothers, John and Michael Topping.
Maria is survived by her beloved husband of 37 years, Bud; her daughter, Jennifer Leenen (Carlos) of Grand Forks, ND; two cherished grandchildren, James and Hannah; her sisters, Linda Topping (Mount Dora, FL), Nanci Johnson (Tennessee), & Carol Topping (Southampton, NY); brother, Thomas Topping (Candler, NC); and her nephews, Michael Topping (Fort Knox, KY) & James Topping (Southampton, NY); and many friends.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that you take a moment to express your love to those who matter most to you, or perform a random act of kindness, as Maria would have wanted.
A private gathering will take place later this year to honor Maria’s memory. The family appreciates your understanding during this difficult time.
