It is with both profound sadness and a joyful peace that we announce the passing of Maria Elva Vargas, the cornerstone of our family and the heart of a large and loving circle that extended to countless friends and loved ones. She joined her Lord and Savior on March 25th, 2026 surrounded by family at her home. Elva was born in Weslaco, TX on August 24th, 1955 to Jesus and Anselma Vargas. In the late 1950’s her family made Granger, Washington their permanent home. There, she met her partner and future husband Domingo Alegria and together they raised their children.
She enjoyed camping trips, going to the beach, growing plants and flowers, caring for her many pets, and mostly spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren. She was known for her playful sense of humor, like giving her family nicknames, and for being a second mom to many. She tirelessly prayed for her loved ones and created a sense of warmth and family everywhere she went.
She is preceded in death by her parents, her siblings Jose Vargas and Hector Vargas, her niece Michele Vargas, her nephew Jesus Vargas III, and her Angel baby. She is survived by her husband, her three children Maria (Richard) Silva, Domingo (Meagan) Alegria, and Joe (Banessa) Alegria, her siblings Irma (Sergio) Martinez, Jesus Vargas Jr., Oralia (Macario) Solis, Emma (Manual) Leon, Israel (Isabel) Vargas, Elvia (Hipolito) Serna, Michael Vargas, 5 grandchildren, 1 great grandchild, and numerous nieces and nephews whom she loved as her own.
Her unwavering devotion to her family and her warm heart are already deeply missed, though the depth of her love will continue on in all who knew her. Recitation of the Rosary will be held at Valley Hills Funeral Home in Sunnyside on Monday March 30th from 4-7 pm. The mass of Christian burial will be held at Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church in Granger on Tuesday March 31st at 10:00 am. Internment will follow at the Zillah City Cemetery. Friends and family are welcome to gather at the Granger Lions Club after services.
