Marian Hoovler Obituary

Marian R. Hoovler

December 16, 1924 - June 20, 2024

Marian R. Hoovler, age 99, passed away peacefully on Thursday, June 20, 2024 at her home in White Stone, VA. She was preceded in death by her husband William S. Hoovler, and two beloved sons, William S. Hoovler, Jr. and Kell R. Hoovler. She is survived by three children: Marilyn Fleming, Gary Hoovler (Rosary), and Cheryl Hoovler (Tom), by 15 grandchildren, 41 great grandchildren, and a great-great grandchild.

Marian was born and raised in Alexandria, but the family moved to Norway, her father's native country, when she was five. They returned to Alexandria after two years, and she had to re-learn English, which she did very quickly. She proved to be an academic star and was moved up two grade levels in the first semester. Propelled by her love of reading and learning, she continued to shine academically throughout her primary and secondary school years. She met the love of her life, William Hoovler, during high school and they married shortly after her graduation. The day after they were married, they traveled across country to catch a ship from the west coast to Alaska, where William was assigned to maintain a radio station for the US army during the war. After the war, Marian and Bill returned to northern Virginia, where she worked for the Department of Agriculture before helping her husband found and run his business, Communications, Inc., which served police and fire departments as well as other civilian agencies and private companies throughout the DC Metro area for nearly forty years. They also owned and operated a farm in Stafford County, where Marian embraced the rural lifestyle and the extra work that attended it. She loved the rhythm of the natural world and had a gift for working with animals, which she passed on to her children.

She and Bill retired to their vacation home in White Stone, where she resided until her passing.

Besides her husband and children, Marian's passions included reading, poetry, music and her Christian faith; she was an active church member throughout her life. Marian also actively supported many charitable and community causes. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations in Marian's name to the Northern Neck and Middlesex Free Health Clinic (https://nnmfhc.org/) and/or the Lancaster Community Library (https://www.lancasterlibrary.org/give).

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, June 29th at 1 p.m. (White Stone Baptist Church 817 Chesapeake Drive) followed by a reception at 2276 Mosquito Point Road. Arrangements are being handled by Currie Funeral Home and Crematory in Kilmarnock.

Praying for the Hoovler family at this difficult time. I attended school with Cheryl and worked with Kell many years ago.
Mrs. Hoovler was certainly part of the "Greatest Generation".
