Karen Anderson Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Direct Cremation Services of Virginia - Chantilly on Oct. 8, 2025.
In Lovin Memory
Karen Lee Anderson helped many people through her work as a Democracy Officer at USAID and her later work as an advocate and translator for children in the U.S. legal system. Karen had a deep capacity for friendship and maintained close relationships with friends around the world. Karen's heart remained tied to her native California. The biggest space in her heart and her greatest delight was in her daughter Gabriela, known as Gabby. Karen died after a valiant battle with cancer.
Karen was born in Los Angeles California in 1953 to Margaret (a clothing designer) and John Robert (an architect). Karen received a degree in Spanish from Occidental College. After graduation she worked and traveled widely, becoming completely fluent in Spanish. She taught English in Guadalajara, Mexico; worked in a restaurant in Costa Rica and served as a paralegal in Anchorage, Alaska. In 1985 Karen graduated from Georgetown University with a master's in foreign service. She first worked as a contractor for USAID and subsequently joined USAID's Foreign Service with postings in Nicaragua, Bolivia and Washington, DC.
Karen retired early from USAID in order to spend more time with her daughter and enjoyed being a key volunteer for the swimming team and eventually learned the details of hockey to support Gabby in her work for the Washington Capitals. In retirement as well, Karen gave many hours to Catholic Charities as a translator for children who entered the U.S. as immigrants without their families. She also was a court-appointed special advocate for children in the Montgomery County legal system. That group is now known as Voices for Children Montgomery. Karen always had a deep concern for the well-being of others, be it guests in her home or children thrown into a frightening and overwhelming legal system. Karen advocated for immigrant rights in the U.S.
Karen loved to travel and to research the history of her ancestors. She discovered distant cousins in Ireland and traced Irish ancestors who emigrated to the U.S. She especially enjoyed traveling with her daughter, Gabby, taking her to Canada, Puerto Rico, and California among other places. Karen and Gabby had a Bolivian street dog, Cleo, for whom they cared for 17 years. Karen always was up for fun, and she will be greatly missed by her many friends.
Karen Lee Anderson is survived by her daughter Gabriela Rachel Cristina Anderson, her sister Leslie Anderson Adams (Richard), niece Emily Day (Patrick), great-nieces Annabelle and Sophie Day, and her nephew Mark Adams (Katie).

I was fortunate to work closely with Karen in Bolivia. She was a lovely person. She radiated a calming presence, had a dry sense of humor that could surprise and delight, and was an outstanding USAID Democracy Officer who served our nation with distinction. She was a loving mother to her daughter Gabby, an adorable toddler when I knew her so many years ago. They seemed to have a wonderful mom & daughter camaraderie and really enjoyed each others´ company. Reading Karen´s obituary, and learning about all she gave back to her community post-retirement from USAID only makes my admiration for Karen grow. I´m sorry that Karen is gone and glad for the presence and grace she brought to my life. Thank you, Karen. Rest in Peace.

Karen and I always told people were sisters, as our last names were both Anderson, and we were both studying Spanish in college. We both got breast cancer, and it breaks my heart that it took her. I sleep with the pillow she sent me every night. Abrazos, mi hermana, ti amo siempre.

When Karen was working with USAID in Bolivia, she generously opened her home to me when I had a work assignment there. I lived with her and her lovely daughter Gaby for a month, and I worked in Karen's office. In addition to being a brilliant development professional and caring and wise mentor, Karen was such a kind and good-hearted person at her core, and she loved Gaby so very much. They were the cutest pair! Gaby was only five years old at the time and it was so sweet watching the two of them together, both adoring each other. I remember their home was one filled with love, laughter, and joy. May dear Karen rest in peace always. Sending love to Gaby and all of Karen's family and friends.

Ayuda's Language Access Program offers our sincere and heartfelt condolences for your loss. Karen served our program for over five years, interpreting for DC and Maryland residents seeking legal and victim services. Karen made a positive and lasting impact, aiding the most vulnerable in sharing their stories and accessing vital information, resources, and services. We are grateful for the time we shared with Karen and for the opportunity to partner with her to make a difference in the communities Ayuda serves. May Karen's memory live on in those who knew and loved her, and may those memories inspire us, comfort us, and bring us joy.

The foto shows Karen with her father at graduation, Georgetown University, MSFS 1985.

Karen will remain in our hearts and minds as an exemplary, wise and tender friend. Our last email exchange was when Christina and I congratulated her for her 70th birthday on December 30, 2023 - and as we all knew Karen: her first words in her reply were a big "thank you": "How sweet of you both to remember my birthday! Receiving the message from you made a very happy start to my day." Karen then provided an update about Gaby (the fulfillment of her life) and that she was very athletically inclined, "unlike of her mother!". At the turn of 2023/2024 Karen still seemed to be doing well - at least she wasn´t complaining, but instead wrote about her volunteer work assisting people with their immigration processes, one of the many charitable activities Karen has been involved in. Christina and I "knew" Karen "only" for our two joint years at Georgetown and a few visits afterwards when we always easily reconnected and intensified our friendship. It was, nevertheless, a friendship for life. Karen, you will remain in our hearts as a very close and dear friend, and an exemplary human being - rest in peace!
