Marie Duguay Obituary

Marie L. (Duguay) Duguay

ATHOL, MA - After a brief and sudden illness, Marie Laura (Duguay) Duguay, 88, of Silver Lake Street passed away early Thursday evening, August 10th, 2023 at Athol Hospital with her beloved son Ricky by her side.

Marie was born on July 13th, 1935 in Cap-Bateau, New Brunswick, Canada. She was the eldest daughter of Elzear and Odile (Hache) Duguay. She moved to the United States on July 8th, 1955 settling into Athol, Massachusetts where she later became a proud American citizen.

On July 9, 1956 Marie married the love of her life Norman Archie Duguay and they enjoyed over 64 years of marriage and three wonderful sons together, (Brian, Ricky and Steven), until Norman's death on November 28th, 2020.

Marie was a hard worker who started her working career in Athol, MA at the J.F MacElwain Shoe shop where she worked for many years until their closing. She then went on to work at the Fleetwood Nursing Home, (now Quabbin Valley Healthcare) and then on to the L.S Starrett Co. where she worked until she retired 25 years ago.

Marie enjoyed many activities thru her long and beautiful life. She loved playing cards with Norman at home and was an excellent cribbage and poker player. She loved to go to the Foxwoods Casino with her husband and play poker while Norman played the slots. She especially enjoyed her gardening thru the years. She always had a beautiful vegetable garden and pretty flowers growing at her home. Right up until her passing, she loved to sit in her rocking chair in her back porch and watch and feed the wild birds. Her favorites were the cardinals, doves and wild turkeys that visited with her almost every day. Marie was a wonderful and creative cook and baker and made really good homemade bread in which she started baking with her mother Odile when she was 4 years old. She also loved to travel and go out to eat.

Marie is survived by her children, Brian Duguay and his wife Teresa of Chester, VA, Rick Duguay of Orange, MA and Steven Duguay of Millville, MA. She also leaves her two grandsons, Douglas Duguay and his wife Megan of Chester, VA and David Duguay and his partner Wendy of Chester, VA. She also leaves behind her two beautiful great grandchildren Alex and Hannah Mae.

Marie shared her life with her extended family from Canada, always staying in touch and traveling to Canada to visit. She leaves behind her sisters, Elva (and Georgie) Roussel, Eva Duguay, Giselle (and Matias) Roussel, Annette (and Theo) Hache and her youngest brother, Leonide Duguay. She also leaves behind many nephews and nieces. Besides her parents and husband, Marie was predeceased by her two younger brothers, Zenon Duguay and Yvon Duguay.

There are no calling hours and services and interment at the Massachusetts Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Winchendon, MA will be private.
