Marilyn J. Lapham, a cherished matriarch and a beacon of light in the lives of those who knew her, passed away peacefully on November 16, 2025, surrounded by her loving family in Sheffield Bay. Born on April 12, 1930, in the quaint town of Centreville, Michigan, Marilyn was a woman imbued with warmth and generosity, whose presence brought comfort and joy to all.
A proud graduate of Michigan State University, she earned her Masters of Education, reflecting her deep commitment not only to learning but also to fostering the growth of others. Her dedication extended far beyond academia; as a devoted member of Westminster Presbyterian Church for many years, she found joy in serving her community and sharing her talents, particularly through her volunteer work with the Bay City Players.
Marilyn found happiness in the little things — relishing the moments spent tending to her beautiful garden, witnessing the triumphs and challenges of the Detroit Tigers, and rooting for Michigan State University in both football and basketball. Yet, her greatest pleasure came from being surrounded by her family. She loved to travel, but it was the cherished times spent with her daughters, Paula (Randy) Pashak and Sharon (Tim) Rutzen, that truly filled her heart with joy.
She was the proud grandmother of five, Gary (NcCole), Kady, Christine Rutzen, Janel (Neil) Alpert, and Melissa (Brian) McKeown, and took immense pride in being a great grandmother to Owen, Alora, Zoey, Brody, Lillian, and Nathan. Each of their smiles and milestones became cherished treasures in her life. Her beloved sister, Linda Beauchamp, and numerous nieces and nephews, Paul, Michel, Peter, Pam, Doug, Patrick, and Mark, also held a special place in her heart.
Marilyn's life was marked by love and devotion, but it was her enduring partnership with her late husband, Durward "Duke" Lapham, that was the cornerstone of her existence. Their 41 years of marriage were filled with shared dreams, laughter, and unwavering support for one another. She was also predeceased by her parents, Seymour and Gertrude (Barnebee) Smith; son, Brian (Judy) Lapham, and her brothers, Rolland Smith and Rovelle Smith, whose memories remained alive in the stories that marked her journey.
As we remember Marilyn, we celebrate a life well-lived—one that was rich in love and laughter, kindness and compassion. Her legacy will continue to inspire all who were fortunate enough to be part of her remarkable story.
At the request of Marilyn, Cremation has taken place and a memorial service will take place at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, November 22, 2025 at Westminster Presbyterian Church. Friends may visit with the family on Saturday, November 22, 2025 from 10:00 a.m. until the time of service at the church.
