Marilyn hired me at my first job out of graduate school and was my mentor and supervisor for a year. We worked together for three but that first year was so special to me. I will always remember getting lost before my interview and running late (per usual which Marilyn understood later on). She waited for me at the end of the street and hopped right into my car! I was so nervous since my car was messy and I had eaten a banana on my way to the interview that was at the floor by her feet. She was so well dressed and looked beautiful and I just remember apologizing for the state of my car. Marilyn instantly made me feel at ease and told me not to worry.
We bonded over being the only women of Jewish descent at work and of course our love of psychology and therapy. We went out to many lunches to discuss our cases together and had numerous "meetings" that lasted hours in her office because the two of us would get carried away chatting about deep topics and our personal lives.
Marilyn showed me how to be a caring therapist and I was always amazed that she was in the field for so many years and showed almost no signs of burn out. That is something I admired. She always supported me when it came to advocating for my clients and that was empowering. I will miss her dearly, will always cherish the time we had together and I hope she is at peace.
