Marilyn J. Young, age 96, peacefully passed away in Falmouth on November 3, 2025. She was born in Quincy, Massachusetts on March 18, 1929, to William and Mabel Rockwell who were originally from Nova Scotia, Canada. Marilyn moved with her parents to Falmouth in 1936. She was a member of the Lawrence High School class of 1946. Following graduation, she was employed in Woods Hole by the Oceanographic Institution. In June of 1945 she met her future husband, Eugene E. Young, Jr. who was also employed at the Oceanographic. They were married on November 8,1947. The couple found land on Oyster Pond Road in Quissett where they built their life-long home. Soon they were blessed with two boys Robert and James. After 48 years of marriage, Eugene died in 1995.
Marilyn had a very successful career in banking. Starting in 1959 as a teller at the Falmouth Co-operative Bank; she rose through the ranks and retired in 1994 as the Assistant Treasurer. In her time working for the bank, she helped many Falmouth residents with their banking and mortgage needs and was greatly appreciated.
In her retirement years she travelled extensively including many trips "across the pond." Her life long love of reading led her to volunteer with the Friends of the Falmouth Public Library; sorting books, researching titles and cashiering at their annual book sale. An accomplished knitter, Marilyn made numerous sweaters for family and friends, booties for all new babies and countless mittens for the giving tree at St. Barnabas church fair. Known for her baking, especially chocolate chip cookies, batches were enjoyed by many over the years. An avid sports fan, she followed her son's hockey games through high school and college. Marilyn and Gene were fixtures at Falmouth Commodore games. And with the next generation, she was there for the grandchildren's sporting events and ballet recitals etc. In later years with her TV on, she enjoyed watching the Red Sox and Patriots, and also treasured visits from her great-grandchildren. Marilyn found a new community at Dillingham Place with activities there including her favorite, bingo, for five years.
She is survived by her two sons Robert (Lynn) James (Catherine, deceased 2004) Grandchildren; Matthew (Molly), Elizabeth (Travis), Gregory (Erin) and Melanie. Also, six great-grandchildren. A brother, Robert Rockwell predeceased her in 1975.
Thank you to the staffs at Heritage & JML for their compassionate care.
A memorial service will be held at St. Barnabas Church, Main Street Falmouth on November 22, 2025, at 11:00 AM. Internment is private, prior to the service.
Memorial donations may be made to the Friends of the Falmouth Public Library.
